why is it that my usb external hdd slows down my startup and login time sooo much i mean i tried a little test and left it off(but connected) until right before i logged on and i booted up and logged in in about 1 minute which usually takes about 6 minutes for booting up to the login screen then another 4 minutes to fully login(launch all startup apps) i have no services or anything that is launched on startup so why is it so much faster when it is not connected
it only does this under windows 2000, it was fine under windows xp

is this something i can fix or should be concerned about or could anyone give me a reason windows does this at the least

if you have a lot of drivers installed for that device (Microsoft driver then you installed your own, yadda yadda) it's goign to slow down, at least, that's what i've been told, never tested it.

You can find out what's going on at bootup and even optimize the bootup process using microsoft's bootvis.

Just search google for that little utility then run it, go to -> Trace -> Optimize System then it will reboot your comp and hopefully speed things up a bit.

If you want to see graphs of which drivers load when, and how long it takes and so on go to -> Trace -> Next Boot or -> Trace -> Next Boot + Driver Delays. Either of those will reboot your system and upon next bootup will show you a load of info about the boot process and what's going on.

You could also delete everything in your C:WINDOWSPrefetch directory and C:WINDOWSTemp, this will slow things down on the next boot as it needs to cache/prefetch the drivers again but after that it should be faster.

EDIT: Sorry, I just noticed you are talking about win2k and bootvis apparently only works with XP

Ignore my post lol.

Bootvis is no longer availiable from Microsoft - see http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/sysperf/fastboot/bootvis.mspx

It does look as though Windows is either initialising everything for the hard drive or it is running something off it. Do you have a USB 1 or 2 system ?

Might also be worth looking in the Event Viewer - see if anything is failing.

Yes, see what is in the Event viewer - something could be failing/loading/initialising...

and there is absolutely nothing under security

maybe its event viewer service thats failing?
