Hi

I've interested in creating a special graphical style with the help of cartoony type textures and maybe lightning later on. Was just wondering if anyone has any methods for this. Maybe make a non-gradiant texture from scratch using soft brushes or perhaps consider some kind of bitmap/vector tracing?

Thanks.

EDIT: It is going to be used for a tile engine, so lightmapping is definatly out of the question. (Unless you know something I don't )

EDIT2: If guys need to know what I'm talking about:

dude I have that zelda, and I tried to download that rose when I had 512 broadband, now I got 1 meg its twice as fast, I would really appreciate it if you were to post a link.

Oh and the shader, if DBP's cartoon shader is just a plain cel shader then plane colours on the texture I would assume would give the cartoon effect, at least thats what I think they did for XIII and Zelda, if you look at my cloud model, the texture is just colour but the cel shader gave it a cool effect, when I tried detailed texture on a cel shaded model, it ruined the look

Post a link to the screenshot or post a link to the game?

I think the effect can be achieved in the texture rather then having to rely on a shader. Zelda is just plain textures and cartoon lightmapping, I think what you are referring to is the characters which where indeed shaded. Can you post a screen of your model? I didnt see any shader when I looked at it...

thanks

link to the game please,

As for non shaded things, like the background, I usually study the texture itself and see how cartoon grass is formed, I'd say its easier than realistic texturing, as for getting the total 2D effect with shaders I don't think is possible with out shaders (or making the character an animated alpha mapped plane, see old games like Might and Magic 7,)the reason you can't get a proper 2D effect without them is because the object is alway automatically phong shader meaning you'd either rely on luminance or cel shading for the right effect, luminance, you could play with the model shader settings in your 3D app with luminance included and apply the idea in DBP with the diffusion, luminance, specular etc. editing commands.
What ever suits you best

Sorry I don't have link to the game Try Google.

As for characters, I don't think I'll be bothering with any shaders (Seeing as I don't know anything) so I'll stick to cartoony textures aswell. (Such as Rose online, which is all in the textures)

I'm not quite sure what the question is. You seem to have decided on what to do really.. so what are you asking? 0_o

he prolly thought some one would know how to get the effect with out using shaders and just use texture, but you can't, sorry for answering for you, buts thats what I deduced from it

Random idea: What about cubemapping with a gradient-like texture?

I think the best way is to go with a hand-drawn texture, as I looked around and those look exactly like what I want.

looking at those screens you posted in your 1st 2 posts, you need to use hand drawn textures, but stick to a bright gradient ramp, and choose your colours off that. also, set your ambient light to 100%

I don't have a sig, live with it.
