Hey all,

Well, BETA testing is coming along quite well, Lee is stuck in front of his computer by some digital glue that he doesn’t know I sent him , coding away like he is supposed to be. We (the BETA team and the Devs) are working on bugs mainly, the BETA testers chewing the Devs ears off about everything we find, but then again that’s our job.

Multiplayer is going to be a big hit, as it’s very well developed and quite capable, although (as one of the Devs said) there are no physics for multiplayer.

The physics for single player? They blow me away. There better than quite a few major games, that’s for sure. I mean, out of the hundred or so major games out there, in how many can you shoot a boulder with a bazooka, the boulder roles onto a ramp, then nocks down a tower, which then kills an entity, which then opens a doer. Also to be able to throw things at enemies, or anything for that matter, well, that’s always very fun.

Also, everyhing has been sped up, so now you don't wait 5 miniutes for a small test level to load.

Okay. Now for some of the best news of all. Although it is not officially supported terrain is possible, . What I and some other people have been doing is using a program like Geoscape3D to make a terrain model with texture, and then importing it as a static entity. This method works perfectly well, and allows the use of small patches of terrain.

Well, that’s about it, except for a typo by Lee in the build game dialog, where instead of saying “Automatic Floor”, it says “AUtomatic Floor”, which mean Lee is staying up coding too late (but he can’t move, ‘cause I’m going to send him more digital glue).

Well, I’m going to get back to work, so happy FPS Creatoring!

Truly yours,
Me, myself and I,
ChrisB

So far within the beta I have been most impressed with the improvements on:

1) The AI. Its gotten alot smarter than the run and gun as fast as it can that I remember around the last RC I played with.

2) The Speed improvements. Seems everything overall is running much faster than I remember. I had a room chock full of various entities, tons boxes with physics, full blown lights, and about 6 Aiko's. It was running at a nice stable 30fps throughout the entire shootout.

3) The physics of course. I was quite impressed the first time I pushed a box down a set of stairs and saw it roll into some other boxes. I actually made a joke test map in which I pushed a box down a large set of stairs into arranged boxes in a "bowling" manner. You guys (and maybe girls, not gonna generalize ) are gonna have a great time playing with v1's physics.

Good, Good. So Beta testers aren't lucky people who asked for the beta to abuse its abilities! Just kidding.

I can confirm, the physics are very cool. I just made a mad level with over 100 crates falling on my head and it all worked damned fast. Then I picked up my rocket launcher and started some re-arranging of the crates!

Another tip, by using a mix of static and dynamic entities you can ensure that your dynamic entities don't jiggle around too much.

Lee has done the business these past few weeks. Finding a lot of slow downs in his code has released FPSC into the product that I wanted us to make.

So forgot EA, long live V1!

@Jordan Siddall: Sorry, only the Dev team, BETA test team and Mods ore alowed to have the BETA versons, as far as i know.

@Sunflash: Well, I will make more tuts when I get home from the mountains. I think you might be able to make a mini Redwall game with V1.

@Everyone else: I'm going to give you untill Tuesday to figure out the feature that EVERYONE will love. If you do, come to the USA TGC convention and I'll buy ya a drink.

I am beta testing but have a job keeping up with Lees updates - downloading and all and have been very busy working as well this week so have not had much time to test in depth.

I can say that I am able to utilise previously made EA maps for those that are interested in that fact.

Mainly I have been working with MP - playing over LAN with two computers here which is great fun I can tell you. Trouble is you just want to keep playing and not working/testing.

Currently awaiting the next Beta version due shortly - another 400mb download I guess.

I will post more info probably next week when I get the Latest Beta and have a chance to set up a new MP map.

Hmm... Lee, can we download a UPDATE for EA? There is like alot of data that we could probally reuse.

P.S. The new feature is a in-game Garden so Lee can Digitally Garden while shooting other players...

P.S.S. Let me really guess... the new feature is that faster compiler that Lee has been working, the "Active Dynamic Recompiler".

And there is a feature all you Halo people will LOVE!
Hmm... Halo = shields... Halo = weapon swapping... Halo="Being killed by a greedy corp known as M$"

You mean there's an AI script now for making the enemies eat donuts and target minorities? soz

I'm probably a lot like the eager folk here, just fascinated by the physics plugins but don't really feel like learning the coding stuff that goes along with it.
One thing I've been hankering for is a FPS game more like Duke Nukem, where setting traps and using pipe-bombs is strategic and actually part of the gameplay (not just a gimmick, an actual gameplay element that adds realism and depth and crazy-death possibilities).

LOL, and here I was gonna say "An AI script to pass the 2 Italians and the Black Guy knife fighting, and go help the Young Blonde who had her purse stolen". You got the job done though, haha.

Anyway, for the last 1 1/2 days I've been on Longhorn, so I can't toy with FPSC for now (can't run any DBP apps actually... probably has something to do with LDDM). When beta 8 comes out later i'll hop back over to XP and toy with it some.

I was ACTUALLY starting a game like the:

Quote: "where setting traps and using pipe-bombs is strategic and actually part of the gameplay (not just a gimmick, an actual gameplay element that adds realism and depth and crazy-death possibilities).
"

...That VanB described, heh. When I've been toying with FPSC i've had 2 games in mind: Duke Nukem 3D, and Unreal. Those 2 have been pretty much the inspiration for all the maps i've created. Well... there was one that was kinda like a Postal/Serious Sam type, but I didn't like it too much.

Okay, think, "CHP" and, "State Trooper", and, "Chase"

And yea, the engine does look like a WAAAAAY advanced verson of the one they used in Duke Nukem 3D.

Vehicles in mp can wait for an upgrade. Obviously there is some weird thing going in FPSC code that conflicts with MP, or better yet the MP portion of FPSC code doesn't fit in with sp. I have a feeling that in order to do all the things in a full loop in SP is too much to deal with net code and the mp version of SPSC had to be radically re-done, hence no physics. (Lee, don't wrap yourself around the axle to make this part of v1 right now if it will delay it). This feature could easily be an upgrade. The man can't do everything.

Well, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only BETA tester who's not keeping up with Lee's updates!

I gotta say, though, I have one of the earlier BETA's here, and playing around with that physics! Damn, it's great fun!

I made an Ice Hockey style game ( Single Player ), where a barrel is the puck, and it slides around all over the place when you run into it

'twas funny

Hopefully I'll be able to get up to date with the latest BETA's soon and feel the full brunt of the beast that is V1!
