One good way to get ideas is look at old games. Abandonware sites have many, many old games with plot descriptions.

If it isn't a problem with the mods I can provide a few links but you can easily find them yourself.

Make a simple trading game.....

When we talk to god, we're praying. When god talks to us, we're schizophrenic.

If you're looking to learn how to program:

Make PONG.
If you can do that and surround in in a nice looking Menu System etc, then you're off to a good start.

From there try a Breakout type Game. (Bouncing Ball knocking Bricks from a Wall).

From there work up to Space Invaders.

If you already know how to program and are looking for original Ideas that's a little more tricky. It will depend on the Genre of game you like yourself.

Sport? Fighter? Strategy? Simulation? Business?
Text Adventure? Puzzle? Board Game? AI?

The secret is to pick a simple idea and see how far you can push it.
E.g. Take Tic-Tac-Toe (X's And O's)

1. Build a Tic-Tac-Toe game with nice graphics and make the computer play a perfect game.

2. Allow Human V Human, Human V Computer, Human V Networked Human,
and Computer V Computer.

3. Make the computer player imperfect but allow it to learn by
playing.

4. Set up your perfect Computer to play against your learning
computer, and see how long it takes to get good.

When you've done all that move into 3D and make a 3D Tic-Tac-Toe game.
