I'm just curious whether people prefer overhead or side view space shooters. Of course they don't necassarily have to be in space, but that's just a good way of specifying exactly what "shooter" means. I've made 3 games of this type (2 overhead, one side/overhead) and I'm wondering which kind is more popular.

i allways loved freelancer and the way you control the ship as its combining rotation and aiming just with the mouse so i find it easy to use.

I love Freelancer too. I wish they'd make a new one... but with less annoying conversations with people.

I don't consider Freelancer a "shooter" though. Shooters to me are games like 1942. I like the overhead view.

Shooters are cool. My favorites are R-Type and Layer Section. Although I think R-Type should be faster, while Layer Section should be more difficult. But they're cool because their gameplay is different.

Layer Section still has the best sprite effects ever.

Kenta Cho's shooters are all about speed, though.
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/index_e.html Tumiki Fighters has an interesting concept.

I still remember playing SWIV. I loved it when I was a kid because of the overkill powerups, though I've only beaten the game once. The intro and stage 1 music is still in my head ^_^

But meh. People like different things:
- Higher difficulty (though some like it easier ^_^)
- Powerups and varying gameplay
- Faster/slower gameplay
- Flood the screen with bullets (*cough* Kenta Cho)
- etc.

A cute'em up is a good break from the space theme, though. Marchen Adventure Cotton 100%, Keio Flying Squadron (I wanna play this one ^_^), etc.

What about side scrolling top view? Uridium was tops is basically the angle I'm going for here. Or what about that speccy game that had a top down vertically scrolling shoot-em-up, with at the same time the same scene shown horizontally scrolling. The idea was to line up in both horizontal and vertical axes to shoot at the enemy. Nice idea, hard as f*** in reality. Thought it was W.A.R., but with a bit of research, don't think it is anymore... damn... rats, wasn't Silkworm either... just thinking of rock hard shoot-em-ups... anyone for an impromptu name the game?

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing
