I am looking for any code or suggestions as to how to create the effect of blur behind a moving object.

The program I am working on uses AI agents firing arrows, but they are hard to see, and would look better w/ a particle trail (like those behind swinging swords in games)

I remember someone saying to use plane particles to stretch behind an object, then fade them as they were pushed back in line from the moving object. Are there any other ways this can be done, or any code pieces demonstrating this effect?
