i'd say he interpreted from a tutorial.
Chenak: my advice for texturing using intensity maps is this;
1.Use a 1024x1024 map, it doesn't need to be bigger
2.Have your unwrapped wire frame as the bottom layer
3.make a black flood fill new layer
4.make a new layer and flood fill it grey (not the automatic way) set it to overlay blending
5.make a final layer for colour set it to overlay as well
6.choose a colour for the skin tone, and anything else, and paint the colour onto the colour layer (you'll need to play around with this, as it'll be in overlay mode, you might also want to tweak the opacity of the colour layer)
7.you can now show or hide the black layer to toggle the wireframe.
8.use the dodge and burn tools on the grey layer to add detail.
your layer pallete should be in this order;
colour
value (the grey layer)
blackout (the black layer)
background (your wireframe)
you can also add a highlight layer at the top, and use the soft light blending mode and use white to draw attention and black to push it away.
have a look at this tutorial;
