Yes, 500-1000 is considered 'low-poly'. It depends of course on the mode. For an ammo box, 6 polygons is low-poly. For the main character, 2000 is low-poly. 1500 is still considered pretty low-poly for important NPCs (ex: few of them). Also, using 'instance object' in DBpro can help clone many static objects (like ammo boxes - they don't animate) in a way that helps improve framerates.

Basically, the larger and more important an object is, the more polygons can be allocated to it.

hmmmm 6 polygons for an ammo box wouldn't even give you a cube as everything is tris so therfore you would need 12 for a cube

the latest games enjoy around 3000 polys + for their main characters, lesser characters; 1500-2000. guns in fps; 1000 should be enough really, but you can go much higher, i know i do.

Oh, well yes, DirectX would triangulate it into 12 polys, but the file size would be smaller using squares. (I'm pretty sure, at least.)

well saing as quads would be larger filesize as quads are trianges just grouped together so it would have to save the poly data and the quads.
