I am making a head model, my first ever in Maya. I haven't made the facial structure yet, but I shaped the head and helmet from a sphere. Its supposed to turn out to be a swat guy head (for now) and I have one problem before I start shaping the head to look like a head.

I cant find out how to place a bmp image that I drew.

Here's the pic- http://www.solisearch.net/ims/pic.php?u=191602SZkT&i=177795

You see that black thing? Thats the helmet.
You see that peachish thing? that will be his chin.
You see that little brown thing? Thats the hair.
Under neath the hair, its supposed to be a transperent glass, between the openings of the helmet. I want to place an image of the face behind the glass, before I shape the face. I've searched many places, but I cant seem to find it. Can you please help me?

Also, what would you rate that head so far, for my first model ever? (1 to 10, or 1 to 100)

Thanks.

i don't want to rate it, but what i will say is you need to check out some tutorials, get used to the very basic's of maya (i don't know it myself, so i can't give you any app specific help)

when i started to learn max, i followed loads of REALLY basic tut's that went step by step.

basically what i'm trying to say, don't go headlong into the job that even the best artists on CGTalk dread, start simple.

I don't have a sig, live with it.

But you dont get what I'm saying. I've went through a HECK of a lot of tutorials. Learned a lot about the basics. This is my first actual *model*, like not just some test out. Not like some tutorial thing, I'm actually trying to make a model now. But I've searched and Searched for this problem, and nothing. So I came here. Appearently, no one can help. I understand the basics of Maya. I know how to do all this stuff. So just please, help.

LMAO! you claim to know 'all this' yet you don't know how to texture an object?

look, i don't know too much about maya, but i'm guessing that you would open the material editor, create new material, and then load a bitmap into its diffuse map slot and then drag the material onto the object in question. Of course, you'd need to know about UV mapping for it to work properly, but i guess you know all about that already.

I DID, create the material. I DID load the texture. I DID all that you have said, smart alic, IT JUST DIDN'T WORK. BUT I guess your too good to just try and help with out making all these smart remarks. You could've just done more then a guess (I appreciate that too) and maybe help me find a good tutorial on proper UV mapping. I've treid to look, and tried on my own for some time now.

BTW, I can texture and object, and color one, how do you think I colored the skin and what not? I just can't out how to use your own texture.

So next time before you act like that and start a flame, make sure you know your facts right.

Lock this topic, I'll ask somewhere else.

actually, i did have a look for some tut's before posting, but i couldn't find any maya specific tuts that seemed to be useful.

oh, and no, i couldn't do more than guess, i use max, not maya, and i never have used maya. I can only assume that parts of the work flow will be similar, and make an educated guess.

since you asked for a good tutorial, here's one that's for max on UV mapping. You'll juat have to use the equivilent tools in maya

I could not find any Maya tutorials on texturing models. I have Maya 4 Unlimited. Also, this is off the topic, but Maya 7 Unlimited is going for $389.97 at the Academic Super Store!
