Well this morning my Monitor decided to die. First the picture got all distorted then just went black and I could hear a strange clicking noise, the noise it usually makes just before the picture appears, only repeatedly. Now I have to make do with a monitor which is 14 inches (possibly smaller) and can't support resolutions higher than 800X600. I was just wondering if anyone might be able to tell me why my Old monitor may have died?

Age. Basically they seem to design them to blow up after X years. Sniff near the vents, does it smell of burning? Had this happen on a few monitors, and one even had smoke coming out of it. Weird how they don't last as long as TV's. Hmmm....

I take it we are talking CRT and not LCD BTW? Otherwise scratch all that, I haven't the foggiest with LCD panels.

Considering the price of monitors these days, most people don't really care if a monitor doesn't last more than 2 years. In a lot of cases it's almost a relief so they can buy a decent monitor (this was so in my case several times ). Although now I'm wondering if that dead pixel that's suddenly appeared in the last week or so, is faulty hardware, or simply my Dad's biro after I left him alone on my computer after warning him not to get so close to the screen with his sodding biro. That's my extremely expensive monitor. If it's the biro (casual cleaning not helping) then I will sell him to a slave trader and buy another. That's monitor, not dad.

Cheers

Fair enough. Get a CRT instead. Can pick up a 17" for about £50.

Should put that smurf down then. Unless you were comparing to the (assume ancient) £650 LCD, then $120 is £66.86. Which is still more than the £50 CRT (where every penny counts by the above comments). If you are referring to the £100 LCD quote above then wake up and smell the continent dude. Unless your company can ship to the UK (without shipping charges to up the price), then not all countries sell at the same price. And we are famous for taxing up to the eyeballs. Plus IT has always been that bit more expensive here.

Woah, wake up and smell the inches dude. It's actually quite hard to find them anymore.

I am a penny pincher to the highest rgards, my computer cost me $300 at walmart. My monitor is the most expensive thing about my computer. A while back that site had had free shipping on all combined orders from the bargin bin over $100, this must have been a sale, or they quit doing it since then. But i have gotten my monitor and nice new speakers through this (i actually picked up in store though). This is just one of the many offers out there waiting to be found. The only thing i have ever bought full price was halo 2. Trust me, there are ways to find things cheap, and there are ways to get things sent over seas for cheap. I have in fact bought a few items from the u.k. One of which was my xbox and i got free shipping from amazon, they often have good shipping deals. So just take the time to look around for the good deals, wait for sales at a certain store, and wait for the free shipping offer.

And that was to the UK? Seriously doubt it. Plus even if it was amazingly free, then we would still get shipping taxes from our government. As I said, land of taxes over here.

Trust me. My work covers online shopping (holidays). I haven't shopped in a shop for anything less than £20 in ages. Apart from Blockbuster that now and again does deals amazingly cheaply (rarely as cheap as places like play, CD-Wow, even Amazon, but sometimes). My latest LCD monitor took quite a while to source. Quite suprisingly turned out to be Dell. But nothing else at the time came close (money wise) for sheer size (20.3"), resolution (1600x1200), and update speed (16ms). Also had really good online reviews (Best monitor of 2004 type reviews). Good olde Dell deal, and was pretty cheap (for the UK).

Also my last laptop was through Dell Outlet. Not second hand, but orders that were cancelled. They then refurbish them to make sure they are ok and then put them on the Outlet. Downside is you don't get much choice on the config (already made). Upside is you get it very quickly (already made). I had no problems with mine, and at the time was pretty much cutting edge (gotta love that 1920x1200 res). Got it for almost half price. Major downside with the outlet is that you have to watch it like a hawk for days and days and days (can't write a script as the URL changes randomly every X minutes). I got a sweet deal, and my friend got the same computer with a few extras for about the same price. Seems to be that 99% of the deals are okish, then they get a YTS person or something, and they ring up like 50% off. Lasts for about 5 minutes on a good deal before it's gone, so you have to at least get it in the basket (lasts 15 mins I believe) to think about it.

Dealtime and Kelkoo are good.

Cheers

Precisely. Always makes me laugh when you see someone having a right old go at MS (mainly because it's fashionable to), and in the next breath slagging off all consoles but the XBos (normally for the same reason).
