Paint shop pro or Photoshop are very good programs for texturing and they are quite cheep (not free though).

There is a free program around on the internet very similar to Paint shop pro but i have fogotten the URL.

Lithunwrap (google it) is free for texturing your model. There seems to be suggestions for paint. As for tutorials, Psionic offers awesome tutorials. look them up on MilkShape3d.com's tutorial page. Hope this helps

Tablets are debatable really. While yes they can provide better control something and lend more to your artistic style.

On the other hand artists have good & bad days. With a mouse you never have a bad day.. atleast no in my experience. Sometimes it is just easier to use the mouse for somethings.

Like I enjoy drawing details and getting things sorted with my tablet, but when I'm working on doing shading and highlights.. far far easier to do it all with the mouse. Just feels like there is more control. Photoshop reacts to both differently though.

With a mouse you have a set colour amount, intensity and size. For the tablet though the intensity affects the size. Often this can cause more problems.

Steve,

one way to do what you want is to use blueprints (basically a graphical representation of what you want to build), then using milkshape change the background to whatever image you need - example left view use a side picture, front use front and build your verts and faces off the lines from the images....

attached is an example of a blueprint
