This fourm seems to be mostly for programming 2d but I was wondering if anyone knows any tutorials on digital painting for photoshop or painter. So I can someday learn how to paint like this girl http://www.furiae.com/ shes amazing and digital painting seems like a fun hobby. Sorry if this is an inappropriate subject cause this does seem to be a programming oriented forum.

If you are a good Painter. A graphics Pad and MGI Photosuite would set you straight.

What a Graphics tablet?.... Its a thing where u have a pen. And u draw on the pad and it moves the mouse on the screen. You can get them anywhere. Dixons for example. MGI Photosuite is like Photoshop.

You could be real sneaky though - like Deep Paint is a 3D art package which is stupidly expensive, really a pro only tool. Easy as using an art package but with an already UV mapped model you can use the demo to paint in 3D. I could'nt get great results from it, but you can view the whole texture your working on, anyone with that neato PrintScreen key on their keyboard can figure out what to do with that.

the latest tablets are now a lcd screen underneath so you draw exactly where the result is.

I cant go back using a tablet of this nature.

I suggest you start doing the daily sketch over at CGTalk you can learn a lot from doing that and it encourages you to practice daily. Plus Linda Bergveist(sp?)or Enayla as she is known at CGTalk sometimes submits sketches that us mere mortals can only dream of as finished pieces.

Hehe Mir, of course.

That's like a super expensive, top of the range Wacum tablet with TFT, it's the sort of thing that most graphic artists can't afford, so for your brother or any hobbyist really, a cheap tablet is what's required.

I saw a Wacum tablet, nothing too fancy, just pressure sensitive and a good smooth response, this was in PCWorld for about £35.

Game sells a really cheap tablet, it's reasonably good for those on a severe budget, that's like £25 and the drawing area is quite meagre - it is a nice smooth tablet though. They'll all be USB and pressure sensitive these days, so you might find a basic tablet does all you need - but I recomment stumping up the extra £10 or so and getting a Wacum, they're usually the best quality.

Not at all. Its for all abilities and is a good way to develop your skills by recieving crits. I was fearfull of posting at all at CGTalk once, but the Daily Sketch Group is a very friendly community which always welcomes new members.

I use PS5, with an upgrade to CS laying around somewhere. As for Corel, I can't stand using any of their products.

Reminds me of that one surfing silver super hero or is that what it was meant to be like o well.

I still need a tablet. And really full version of PS. So my Digital painting dreams are going to be held short for a while

For these types of digital paintings I would suggest using painter with a tablet, why? because of the control with your left hand on the keyboard where its quite a lot easier to change brush sizes and to grab colors with the left side of the board. Another reason is the look, as Corel Painter is made to feel more like painting in traditional mediums. As for photoshop, it has a great deal to offer, and is excellent for photomanipulation and hardedge coloring like in a lot of comic books, also for design.

As for a tablet, I've been using a Trust tablet 12x9 till recently, I paid about USD150 for it. If you're serious about painting like this, I think you should probably try finding a tablet no smaller than 12x9, they are a bit more expensive but you can find ones under USD100 I belive. Currently I'm using a WACom Intous3 12x9 which is great, but also quite a bit expensive for starting up. Just get a tablet, its important

Incidently, a quick tip for graphics tabs...

Get some decent quality sketch paper and tape it over the tablet - it's not something you should make permanent, but the extra rough texture of the paper can help make your work less mechanical, more like sketching. I'd try it the next time you want something to look tarnished - it can be tricky to put a lot of detail into things using a tablet, so the little wobbles and bumps can help.

I use a pen tablet made by Genius, it's not much but it's inexpensive, good for beginners like me.
