Since im pretty much done with the organ and I have a habit of starting things while not finished with others i started working on a mech. So far Im almost done with the legs:

C&C welcome. The legs are both fitted with inverse kinematics for the tubes and hinges and so on

Bah dark...I like my noise effect And i'll have you know its called ambient occlusion which simulates the bouncing of light rays :p

and the poly count....is...well...ummm...32,000
but keep in mind its not a game model!! its a high poly model and yes I know everyone thinks people should do low poly but frankly since I don't do games I like highpoly.

Im working on the texture but it isn't turning out right so I'll post again once its looking somewhat acceptable.

Just a tiny suggestion to make the 'feet' bigger - those look somewhat small to balance that beast on
Especially if it has to counter balance the kickback on launching those missiles

Very good suggestion lol. Im surprised I didn' think of that but then hey, what is crit for
This doesn't have that fix but it has some work on textures:

Im not quite happy with the textures and I thinking of changing the windshield to black.

Awesome model, too bad it's not for a game.
I like the yellow/black combo, but what are the grey lines on the cockpit? Maybe replace them with fewer lines in a rectangularish pattern? Eh spazuh?

There is only 1 line down the middle now
Hopefully my next post will be with a short test animation. Thanks for the comments all.

next time you post, don't use GI, or any fancy lighting models, all it does is hide problems in the mesh.

while i don't suppose for a minute that this is likely to be used in game, when texturing, turn your material self illumination right up to 100%, if it looks good at full lighting, it'll look awesome with shadows.

the texture's too dark in general, and everyone was comlaining about the cockpit i think.

can you post a wireframe, and the flats? i might do a bit of a paint over myself, if thats ok.

is ambient occlusion even ment to look that crap? surely you have to cast like 100x more rays till it looks 1/2 realistic it looks like your model is in a sandstorm for every render and it truely looks bad like that.

ps heres a render of my 1337 mech!

That mech of yours lacks balance on the side view. Try aligning those two parts i've marked in a straight line, or maybe even further as those missiles and stuff must be heavy. And a bit lower may also work

Great looking mech. The only thing I dont like about it is the CS. I think the cockpit shield should look similar to the one I drew. The bubble window just doesn't suit I mech of that class. Bubble windows are mostly found on underwater models. The triangle window allows stability, while the overhead allows for buttons and switches. Its just my opinion. For balance of a mech, a good example is a ATST or a mech from mechwarriors.

MECHA! WEEEEE!!!!

Ok, first reaction out of the way...Don't really like the yellow. Looks too much like construction equipment. Bubble canopys' got to go. Jokers' looked good.

Other than that...MECHA! WEEEEE!!!!

i was hoping for the texture map, so i could have a go at painting a texture for you, but never mind.

looking at the wires, you've not really distributed your polies very effectivly. the main bulk of the legs are basically cubes, then there's a wire that costs about 100polys. it doesn't make sense.

as for balance and pose... i'd til the cockpit down to the floor slightly, as
a) the driver would see more
b) it'd look more balanced

Well..I actually don't UV map most of my models since I don't know how. I just select verts/objects and apply a texture to them...

I'll try and tilt the cockpit some more i'm working on the next compo right now but i'll try to find some time. About the polys, the legs are in fact cubes so I figured I didn't really need many polys, where as the hydralic tubes are smooth and therefore need more polys. Since I dont' care about poly count it doesn't really make that much of a difference does it? I do agree that the topography isn't so great but it doesn't really affect the look of the rendered model as far as I know. Personally I like the yellow/black but maybe i'll try a different color scheme.

exactly, you could have had rounded legs, or vastly complex structures, with service hatches, nuts and bolts etc.

and i think its time to learn the mysterys of UV mapping.
