I currently use milk shape and I won't to know what modeling program is better, 3D Studio Max or Lightwave.

Theres a huge differance between the two. 3Ds max is the most commonly used by the pros in games, has made models for games such as Prince of Persia: Warrior within and several others. Lightwave however has none to my knowledge...
3DS max is certainly the most expensive and most feature packed, but doesn't necessarily mean the best for you, check the demo's out and see which one you like better...but...

Milkshape->3DS max is a big jump, is your wallet up to it, considering the price, same for Lightwave, you'll be expecting prices in the thousands for max and a about a thousand depending o your currency

Out of your price range. As is Lightwave, if you're using Milkshape 3d.

Just stick with Milkshape. Until you master it, jumping to a newer program isn't going to boost your modelling ability.

very expensive, but not among the expensive two.

3D Studio Max £2,695 ($3,495)
Lightwave - £995 ($1,595)

You might wanna settle with TrueSpace, GameSpace, Carrara or Aist, or even the free but powerful (although very confusing GUI for most modellers making the switch, use the tutorials and you'll understand it in no time)

and 3D studio Max isn't the most expensive, Maya Unlimited is £4,899 and Houdini Master is £8,769, the program used to animate Lord of the rings was Endorphin £7,995, and it only animates, looked at tutorial for it, looks like an amazing program.

As you can see, pro CG animation can be very expensive, don't expect powerful things to be cheap as Milkshape, its a harsh truth ironically a year a go I was surfing around looking at 3DS max and Lightwave and Cinema 4D thinking, wow I want them they cool, can't be any more expensive than photoshop, then eventually found the prices, I thought bugger

For the money Milkshape is a great program once you learn how to use it...

Here is a little sample of a milkshape face (wip) a la guildwars style..

at least thats where I borrowed the texturing from...

If your planning on building games with Dark Basic using something like Maya is like drilling a tooth cavity with a jackhammer...

Thanks Big, BTW you do some great work...

There is nothing wrong with wanting the more powerful 3-d programs...

Just wanted to point out, for those of us that have real bills to pay, Milkshape and some of the other lower cost or free programs can get the job done.... At least for this compiler...

If you want an affordable Pro modeller, try TrueSpace or GameSpace.

Skalex, neither Truespace or Gamespace are 'pro'.

I actually agree with Heckno anology. There is absolutly no point in switching to 3d Studio Max, or any kind of big app (especially since no one here can actually afford it), if you cannot master programs like Milkshape 3d. I think I'm pretty experienced at Milkshape, and am now looking into Maya and Cinema 4d.

If you are an amateur game developer, you are never going to use the power of bigger applications and will probably create LOWER grade work because the learning curve is much steeper.

well i've never used 3DSMax but i used gmax for awhile and it supposed to be pretty similar...

and i was able to create much better models in it then i can in milkshape... (i really enjoyed working with quads and being able to divide edges cleanly and smoothly)

i'm still getting used to milkshape...(gmax didn't export well enough for me)

i wouldn't suggest buying anything too pricy, until you've ruled out milkshape...(but if you've mastered it and need more features then go ahead and do some trial shopping)
