2d art has always been one of the most amazing things to me when I was young. Even today, many 2D sprites in new and old games take my breath away. Sadly, I know not how to make them! Could someone please give me some insight on how to make eye-pleasing sprites(terrain and characters), like the ones for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past or Golden Sun? I also really liked Zenassem's sprite character that he used in his tutorial, 2D Principles with DB/DBpro Tutorial Part I, in explaining the layers used in tile maps. Thank you very much!

Regards,
CD

You just crack open Paint, select a colour and start drawing. The line and fill tools are your friends. That´s about all there is to it.

My signature has been erased by me because it's LARGE.
Thank you for the votez!1!

Crystal Darkness,

It all comes from the loose imagination. It can be taught, maybe, but not always easily. However, this is why schools have art classes. But note, that if you practice, you will become better, undoubtebly!

Check out the Eyes on Design website, which is filled with great tutorials on graphic design. Remember, make use of the internet and yoiur local library. I wouldn't rely on these forums to learn such an intracit subject. DO NOT forget about your local library. It is your most useful resource for knowledge!

Well, I did find an online tutorial for making sprites, tryed it out and got some ok things, Calypson, but is it where I should be heading? The tutorial is at [href]www.gamespp.com/tutorials/ConvertingArtToSprites.html[/href].

look i dunno if this will help but i reckon my artistic skills are way on the amature side. i don't think i could draw a straight line if i wanted to. so in order to get reasonable quality graphics i use swift3d (www.erain.com) it's a 100 odd bucks but it'll generate cell shaded graphics AND animations. it doesn't have a really huge learning curve and it exports to all graphics formats (animations to mulitple bitmaps, cell shaded stuff to .swf).
now this takes effort. your not gonna get this and in a week churn out quality graphics, it's gonna take a month or so.
for me it woz a god send. one day i couldn't draw for crap and with a little effort i can now produce graphics and animations which i think are fairly competitive (not in calypsons league though but competitive still). they have a good support forum and a great community site www.swiftdev.com

here are some tilesets i made (with swift) as well;

awww, Calypson, you're being generous! You showed the people what's what

BlinkOk, wow... I didn't know Swift3D had gotten that good! Last time I used it, it was still pretty dodgy at its raster to vector stuff... I might have to have a look into that again !

well if your going to learn how to make sprites, it'd be better if you learned from somebody that was good. this guy can make stuff, sure, but he is by no means good. check out this links i showed ya. Pixel something, post it there, and they will all help you out to make it better and teach you how to sprite.

seriousely, those forums are full of many great artists that are more than willing to help. Learning from many great people is alot better than looking up some tutorials and only learning from one not-so-good guy.

I'm gonna take a look at Swift 3D as well!!

I like those 3D looking sprites. Frankenstein's head rotates a little, and looks perfectly formed.
