Well, this is my entry for the Retro Competition!

Due ot copyright issues I cannot use Samus or any Metroid music or locales so I've had to settle with this:

- Cute little robot
- Similar laser gun
- Similar-ish levels
- Robot crash lands on planet
- Aliens.

The camera is a lot like Mario Sunshine's, along with another feature, a rocket pack which works in the same way as Mario's FLUDD by allowing our robot make jumps and generally hover

For earlier pictures, se the "My Retro Game" topic, but here is the latest showing the SMS camera.

PS - the FPS isn't usually that low!

I've been at it about 4 hours now (over 1 week, it's going to get much more intense now!).

I'm working on the game engine - plug-n-play levels, lebel loading / uloading and the basic game. I add frilly bits like menus after

"I'm still working on the menu"

Generally I think it is better to leave the menues until last and get the core game up and running first - otherwise you can mistime things badly.

I'm not incredible, just know how to go about things

I firt created rocket rail effect (30 mins) - separate project

Then I started the main game and just plugged bits in. Rocket trail, Merc 2 bullet engine (from Mercenaries 2) etc.

I then just went about writing it how I wrote Merc 2. The 2 games have exactly the same structure. And considering Merc 2 has been going for almost 5 months, I've learnt a lot

Right, here's one of him just after firing a laser bullet. The laser effect is in full 3D, that's not a plain or sprite

Bear in mind I'm still working on it, just wait until I've got the Metroid Missile in, smoke trail and all!

This coding error I ran into while adding smoke trails has given me a very good idea - for Third Person Guided Missiles!

The player "became" the bullet, with the camera rushing through the level with a trail of flames behind it - that could be put to good use!

(^_^) cool ... so its gonna be a laser bolt, or you having a cool like laser beam like in Metroid?

i think a cross version would look cool ... so like you have an X of plains going towards the laser bolt.
roughly how the Lightning gun is done in Quake3 with a good texture does a very nice effect - could make a beam that has sparks that animate along it, each sub version has the next frame so to speak ... would look cool as hell

I just hope that "cute little robot" is a stand in untill you make the real one.

Am I a butterfly dreaming I'm a man?
Or a bowling ball dreaming I'm a plate of samishi?
Never assume that what you see or feel is real.

No, he's staying - I have no more robot models and I can't use Samus

Raven: Probably bolts, but by changing a few lines it can become a beam

However, when it becomes a beam you lose the effect of the bullet's movement.

I've finished the guided missle system now, just putting in a few finishing touches (like proper smoke trail, different bolt object etc.)

They're watching you...Run.

Very nice shots. Though, add some nice smoothed scenery..

Yes, hopefully nicer scenery will come in the next level which will now be based in the basement area. However, since DBP's convfertor does not like rounded curfaces, I'll have to use some very inventive thinking.

um since the game isnt going to be sold then whats stoping you from making samus? i mean its for the retro and if you couldnt use samus by logic no one could use any registered character, no bubble bobble, no pong, no pacman...

Read the competition rules ,it says no ©-ed characters. (there is a link at the top of the page)

And even if it's freeware it's still illegal.

Although we might not sell the games... DarkBasic Software might end up packaging it on a later release on DarkBasic Pro as part of a demo's CD (happened with DarkBasic)

also some characters suchas Mario you don't have to make money from to actually be sued for useage.

But these characters have unique names and looks. I could if I wanted to try and create a Samus lookalike but to model it in 3D would be a challenge, since I have no modelling experience

Obviously things such as animal species etc. cannot be copyrighted, but names can be.

i don't think so because tom isn't calling it BubbleBobble3D and the characters are allowed as along as they're not the same as the original to a point where they can sue...

as there was never a 3D version then the baby dragon is cool - and somehow not to dis tom's modeling abilities, but it doesn't looks like a flawless lookalike
