does anyone want to take on the burden of teaching me how to program darkBASIC pro games we could start of simple by designing the game and then by adding sound textures and camera views(no knowledge on camera programming) i know this is a weird post and you will probaly tell me to find out for myself but if you keep that up you'll scare away all the newbies

Van B dont look at this it is not for your eyes

if you actualy intend to learn rather than just copy code and keep replying "OK" then I will offer to tutor you, but I have tried teaching people before and they seem to think they have to make no effort, just copy "da codez" down and ask for the next bit, thats just a total waste of my time and I don`t want to do that again, IF you realy want to learn and are willing to start at the beginning, then I will start with the basics then show you how to code a couple of simple games to get things down solid, after that I will show you how to code something of your own choice, as long as you make the effort I don`t care how long it takes, but if you just keep posting "yeah! I get that!, whats the next bit?" then I just will not bother, I want to be sure you understand each step, cut`n`paste artists learn nothing.

this might sound severe but I have wasted a lot of time on people via MSN and E-Mail who swore they wanted to learn and obviously could not be bothered once they found they had to think for themselves, I did swear I would not do this again but like the man said, you asked the right question, so you got off to good start, reply if you are serious and interested and can spare a couple of hours per day EVERY day to actualy work on the projects.

I cannot underestimate the value of tutorials if you are new to programming and it would help Me! considerably if you get a few of them under your belt before he started anything with you.

If nothing else, you will at least understand some of the terminology used.

I set out to design some introductory tutorials for Dark Basic which you can take a look at. They start at the very beginning and assume you have no experience in programming at all (particularly the first two in the series).

You can find them at:

http://www.computechtenerife.com/DB/tutorials.htm

They might give you a bit of a head start...

well i understand a lot of the terminollogy, i originally started on a freinds advice with c++. then i saw dbc and gave it a go, unfortunatly i stopped for a while and now im back. im no good at structuring my programs, what bit goes where, i understand the commands but coz i got into c++ i was writing small programs easily, with basic being a different language the structoring rules changed so thats where i get mixed up.
i will get there on my own but maybe a tutor would be a better line, someone to actually talk to about the same thing can work wonders.
i will also check out your tutorials. thanks

Um, capslock?

Darkbasic MAD, I'm not sure you're providing the right help here. Someone's asking for tutoring, not a lump of code. The person asking for help in learning to structure their programs will get nothing from your example.

Structuring programs is something that I have trouble with in anything bigger than a 1000 lines or so. Wiser heads than ours required, I think.

If you have no knowledge on camera programming than why don't you check out the codebase? There probably is some code you could use.

Deep Thought 42:

The codebase is very useful for many things, but I'm not so sure it's a help or a hinderance to newcomers. It depends on how the information there is used.

For example, if we went there to see how to do something, then in any given snippet of code, we would understand the syntax and be familiar with the commands and what they did. We would look at it and see the method of doing whatever the task was and probably go away and write our own code using the same method.

However, I often wonder how many newcomers go there, see some code and just copy and paste the lot into their own programs without having the slightest clue as to how any of it works?

They are then on the forums asking us why X and Y doesn't work and not understanding the answers when you tell them!

The code-base does have it's place, but I firmly believe that newcomers should learn what they can from tutorials and writing small programs of their own first - before making use of the code-base.

[Edit] Oh and yes - Darth Vader: I forgot to say... a mentor is a very good idea if you can find anyone with the time to give you help! But make sure they know what they are talking about. It's very easy to teach someone how not to program if that's what you do yourself!

If someone still needs help understanding code ill help and explain to them why each thing works the way it does and how to do such and such. this is the least i can do as i got help as a newbie.

@ Me

I am not a copy and paste editor i like to learn everything about anything i am doing. And i mean everything. Iuse DarkBASIC pro and i do understand some basic coding but know nothing of 2D or 3D programming i have made one small text based game with a few pictures and music in the background but nothing else.

As to the getting together everyday i can except for Wensdays Saturdays and Sundays. If you would still like to teach me please give me your email address as that would be easier then using a thread.

Thank You and Kind Regards!
