From reading a few threads its made clear that DEV isnt compatible due to the differences in libs but what about Visual C++ Express Edition, free one offered on MSDN, does that use the same libs and is it compatible?

Are you talking about 2005 or the free Visual C Download thing. If its the first, then apparently all is well with it. Unfortunately if its the latter, then it would work if Microsoft had included various bits from both the full Visual C Studio and DirectX.

Unfortunately without those, it doesn't work.

You will need to download Visual C++ 2005 Beta 2, and the PlatformSDK in order to make things work. The free compiler should also work if you download the platformSDK.

It's easier with Beta 1. You don't have to hack support for additional library systems.
