Best 2D langauge .. Compared to what ?

While I doubt 'PlayBasic' is the best 2D exclusive language on the market at this point. But if your comparing Play to DB and Dbpro then it's most likely the better option in the majority of cases. It really depends on what type of programs and level of experience the programmer has.

PB was primarily designed to encapsulate many concerns of the traditional 2D programmer. While it's impossible to include everything, it does give users a considerable leg up on DB & Dbpro. Some key areas of this are things like are built in mapping and World/Sprite collisions.

PB vs DB

There is not a single situation where I would recommend DB classic over PlayBasic for traditional 2D games production. The 2D command set in DB classic simply weren't implemented with serious 2D gaming in mind. While it can certainly do 2D, users could better results in PB.

PB vs DBpro

Computationally Dbpro has a substantial edge over PB V1.089 (and bellow) PB V1.089 is about on a par with DB classic raw computation wise. However this easily offset via using PB's built in functionality over rolling your own. So while it's computational slower then DBpro, you can already achieve comparable results in most cases.

The key advantage that Dbpro offers users is it's DX9 Hardware Accelerated sprites. PlayBasic uses a software rendering engine to keep your programs system requirements at the DX3 level. This mainly effects Sprite Rotation/Scaling and in particular Alpha blending speed. Which is substantially quicker when implemented in hardware than software.

While Alpha is much slower in software (Due the video memory bus mainly), pure Sprite Rotations are far more comparable (but hardware is faster). Thus if you only need rotation and don't mind missing out on some flashy transparency alpha effects, then PB is probably going to be the better solution for most programmers. beginners in particular.

Once you move past the hardware sprite benefits in DBpro, you find your required to roll everything yourself. From Mapping /Collision/Visibility/Ray intersection etc etc While all these features and more are built right into PlayBasic !

PB V1.09 - PlayBasic FX and beyond

PlayBasic is constantly evolving 2D development system and will remain so. PBV1.09 (the next major public update) takes the compiler and execution speed way beyond the current release version. Giving PB programmers the brute force muscle, if they require it.

Beyond this, comes the PlayBasic FX module. This module adds 2D hardware acceleration to PlayBasic, and thus eliminating the only benefit DBpro has over PB at this point. While it won't be available until early 2006, it's not far away

PB FX

At this point, the retail pricing of PBFX (Stand alone) is yet to be decided. As such, we haven't made any decisions about the cost (if any) of adding the FX module for existing PB owners.

What will probably happen is existing PB owners will get the FX module update either free or heavily discounted. So they'll get it cheaper no matter what. But we'll make an official announcement later in the year about pricing and upgrade paths..

Multi player,

While we have plans to implement a native solution, it's become a low priority given 3rd party libraries like K-NetLib can be used.

I've already written a quick wrapper for. K-NetLib For PlayBasic
