I have been working on this game for about a week now, not much but I have some screenshots and a rough draft of the storyline. So here it goes...
Desert-Planet-
The year is 2789. The world had been warned
multiple times of possible natural disasters but
alas, they did not listen. Because of the human
races ignorence, the Earth undergoes global warming
on a massive degree. All the oceans, lakes, ponds,
everything now cover the atmosphere in a hazy fog.
The ground however is now left desolate and dry, the
whole world a desert and over 75% more land for the
taking.
You are part of a law enforcement group, sent
from Mars to help the people of Earth in its new
struggle to keep the peace from raiders trying to
get their share of the new land. You are assigned
to an outpost in the lower badlands, a dangerous
place indeed. When our hero arives at his station,
he finds it collapsed and burnt, the raiders got to
it first. As you examine a strange formation of
symbols, a sharp pain fills your head as a man
whacks the main character over the head. You later
awake in a room bellow the surface with a sandstorm
raging outside. The man sends you on your way with
nothing but a few rations of food. Thus the story
begins...
-Try to survive in a world of danger
-Discover who destroyed your outpost and why
-Make it to the top continental plates and get the
hell off Earth! Or stay and build a stronghold in
the desert...
-Become anything from a crime lord to a police
lieutenant
THE CHOICES ARE YOURS TO MAKE!!!

Theres the story line, and the screenshots are at http://www.desert-planet.zoomshare.com/ and
http://www.freewebs.com/evco/
Let me know what you think so far, and email me suggestions at darkfury@fastmail.us
I have a lot of homework lately but I am trying hard to get the game off the ground. Also, does anyone have a set of hands that I can use in first person mode? I am horible at hands, as you will see, I only use blocks for hands.
I have to give credit to darkmatter because I use their models as guidelines to teach myself how to model people. If my models look somewhat like theirs it is because that is what I base them off of

Have you forgotton this is the WIP?? He's shown plenty of progress, and clearly has some idea of what he's doing. I can't imagine a thread like this getting flamed.

LordoFire: I like the story, and those are prety good screens for being only a week into it. The goggle effect is pretty cool! The untextured model of a clan leader looks nice, and I hope to see this go far. Good luck! And don't worry about the hands, you can worry about the graphics later. And those websites look pretty nice.

UPDATE!
Since my sites arnt letting my post screenshots because they are stupid, I just used photobucket. Heres the talking system. I will be integrating a weapons crafting system tommorow and the day after...

C&C definitely welcome! As soon as I can, I will also put it on my sites!
and now for the responses-
@TDP- I greatly doubt that I will get flamed as I have shown a sufficient amount of information for the time I have been working on it
@Louiz- thanks for the comment
@Bizar- Thanks for the encouragment man. Yeah, I work on just gameplay now, graphics and effects later!
@Admiral- Yep, I love when people focus on gameplay too!

@TDP-Thanks
@Megaton-What you mean by cheesebag? I dont understand
EDIT-
Mega, I thought it over for a few minutes and think that you are calling it cheesy If so, I would like to remind you that I just started it and I expect it to sound extremely cheesy (especially the graphics and the farfetched story line)
And if it was meant to be offensive, which im sure it wasnt, but if so, please dont post if it is not something nice

Lordo, my suggestion... ignore anything that seems like a dig or your don't understand.

It's annoying and stupid how many of these people will sit there and put people down even in the WIP section. When most of them have barely been able to make a cube on a matrix anyways.

Even when they have done something I don't see how that gives them much of a right to be hyper-critical of others. No need to sit there and bitch in other peoples threads. This damn community needs more new users and those who are actually putting in effort to get things done. Even when they aren't I still say your not helping situations by picking on everyone. It won't make them stop being idiots it just enforces them with the attention they want and they'll keep doing it.

Whole thing is retarded.

On the game itself. Lil to early to tell what to make of it so far. Looks like a promising start though.

raven, were you refering to me picking on him? I didnt pick on anyone, because you used the word "you" in there alot and it was directed toward me I believe. Oh well.

Thank you for the comment on it looking like a promising start. The game is basically a fps with a few rpg elements thrown into it. You can go anywhere you want, do whatever you want to do, make weapons (which im adding in as I speak) etc. I have lots of things i need to add and realize I dont have that much that I could post yet as screenshots are mostly just graphics. I dont feel like releasing a demo yet but the controls are real smooth

Thought so, it was just the way he worded it I just finished the first little quest thing by the way. You have to deliver this one package to a merchant guy, ya know, beginning of the game quest type things. Alrighty, back to work for me!

How much of the engine is done?

Well, I am pretty bad at estimating. But I'd say about 30% of the engine is done. I have all the movement controls etc. in. I have to finish the weapons crafting system and I just built the inventory controls right now. I tested it and the package was there . But I still have to add in the stronghold building process which is quite a large amount of the engine. I also need some major enemy a.i, because right now all they can do is walk around, and one of the enemies can shoot . I still have quite a while to go, and dont take my estimated percentage for much, but I will keep you guys posted Speaking of posted, Im going to add some screenshots of the inventory system and the quest tommorow, plus a little town that I created for the outskirts of an empire

I'm guessing I can crank out a little demo this weekend. Dont expect one until about sunday though, I still have some bugs to fix and I'm working on the beginning movie where ya come down in the spaceship and go to your outpost ect. That part might not even be in the demo, I will probably just have a tutorial.

Alrighty then, I said I would post some more screenshots today so here they are. They will be added to my website as soon as possible but I am having troubles with that. Alrighty then, first one is a picture of an entrance into an alleyway somewhere in a small town on the outskirts of a city. Second one is looking into one of the homes, and third is a picture of the crapy inventory I have created with bad art because Thomas hasnt made the in-game art yet

OK, I STILL HAVNT MADE DEMO, and I have been gone for what seems like forever because I was on vacation Alrighty, I just got back and did I little work on my game. I have been playing splinter cell lately and liked the rifle, but I also liked that one scoped rifle from counter strike, so I made a cross between them!

Thats my rifle, and here it is in action with a bullet flying out of it. By the way, it has a muzzle suppresor, however a burst of air can be seen when it is fired. It pops up too quick though and I couldnt catch it!

Right, I also made an underground base but havnt taken screenshots of it yet. I'm adding in collision now and after that I have the basic system done!!!

How did you get those sprites (The text boxes and the goggles) to be transparent?

@ xeno: Lol, ok, ill tell ya. I just made a simple grey on white texture in paint. Then I stuck that on a plain in db and set ghosting on. Then just put the ghosted plain infront of the camera or as far away as you please, and you can see right through it...heres a snippet...

I hope that answered your question.

Now for the general stuff. I have some more screens with a skybox in, and I DID make a video of it that is only 24 seconds long and 88 kbs in size but as I said, my websites suck. Here are the screens, a bit smaller than the other ones for all you 56ers out there!

and here it is looking nearly directly at the sun

Thats all for now, I'm still fixing some things and modelling some cities!

Today I have been organizing my code into functions and it now all fits on one page when they are closed yay! Besides that, I have been painting my room and buying new furniture. But I just made a new character for my game, as I decided to add some sort of comedy...

He is lord franchesko, a bum who thinks he is a super hero. He wheres a tin can on his head with a shower curtain coming out the back. Hes grenades of doom are really just tin cans and his utility belt a string tied around his waist. His texture is still under production but will basically be muddy clothes with a shower curtain, tin can, etc.
-Evan
-EDIT-
I figure I could tell you a little about what he can do. You can buy tin cans from him, which can be throw at a persons eye, stub a toe, be caught and thrown back at you, or just bounce off harmlessly. Or you can hire him to assassinate people, which he charges too much for and always fails and gets injured or incapacitated in the process. Basically, you should just pay him a bunch to go assassinate a really well guarded person, watch him get massacred and then go get your money back from his corpse. Good fun aye?

Ok, no screens in this post, but I have created 50% of the beginning movie Now im recording voiceovers for the characters in it, and after that, I HAVE A DEMO READY!!! So expect it earliest by next weekend and latest by the weekend after that, because I have to animate the characters. Or, if you guys would like, I could just post the 2d part that I just made and post the rest later. Your choice!

Nice!!!!!

Say, could you do a voice-over for my game?

Now that the 'old bill' topic is finally out of the way,

Is this DBPro or DBC?

Cause if its DBC, what do you use to animate correctly?

Sure, just send me the script and tell me what the voices etc. should sound like. I have tons of willing people doing voices for me where I live, some of them including my parents I am using dbpro and use character fx which for some reason goes really slow in dbc
GENERAL UPDATE:
Ok, im working on the blur effect, which I made a thread in game design theories for but because you cant post code there, could anyone help me here? It would be most appreciated. I am accepting any sort of cool effects that anyone can offer such as blurs, cool lighting, neat bouncing effects for camera, etc. If you contribute and I can use it, your name (your real one or forums, your choice) will go in the credits, and if I ever finish this and somehow sell it, you will recieve a free copy I can also take requests for any funny outlandish characters people want to be put in the game, sort of like lord Franchesko. I will have a bunch of weirdos in dark alleys on it and a village idiot for each town that are hidden somewhere. The openning music for my game is cheerfull regae stuff called "bananas" even though it is a story about catostrophic events. Basically, I'm adding in some comedy sort of like interplays fallout, where everything contrasts each other. I'm gonna get back to animating a guys face which is difficult enough to piss me off!

@gamedev-Im using a little program I wrote myself that just places objects around and then I add lighting in the actual code. I'm working on lighting right after the intro is done so expect it in a week or two

It depends. By intro do you mean the intro to the game everytime you start it up or the one that is at the beginning of the game when you press "New Game"? I am 50% done with the one at the beginning of the game but could use an intro for the one you see every time. If you would like to help email me at darkfury@fastmail.us. I could email you some models that you could use, and all the 2d art/logos and stuff like that. I cant promis you your movie will be used though, as the game is subject to change and I may want to make it myself. I do believe you said you were using dbc, so I will probably add some effects that are dbpro only
Thanks for the comments
-Evan
p.s. Im not that great at coding, I just had most of the movement and basic controls done before I posted, and now I'm just making all the media and piecing it together

@Xeno: I dont want you to do the menu. I just want you to do the introduction to the game, the one you see everytime you start it and it can be skipped by pressing escape, etc. I will do the menu and the introduction that you see after you press the new game option. Thanks for the help.

@Lordo Fire - there are a couple of ways to do it, the way that was used in the community FPS was to use the newton wrapper, works real well for collision and physics(free) but doesn't have the easiest learning curve but gives good all around results, or then there's Nuclear Glory collision, but that's been outa development for a bit and would cost you 15 - 25+$ if you want to shell out for something like that, it's easier to use and implement but costs. Thirdly there's sparkys collision DLL, havn't used that as much but its similar to nuclear glory except not as advanced(free).

Thats about as specific as I can make it without you telling a bit more about the problem.

Good work, it's lookin good!

Thanks cpu, I'm gonna download newton because I'm using that for crates, etc. anyways, and I will download sparkys to see if it is a bit easier to use. Again, once I have collision and the animations for the face in the beginning movie are done and implemented, I will release a demo of what I have thus far.
The demo will include-
'A menu
'The beginning movie
'Gameplay alowing travel from start to city of Cord, which is pretty early in the game.
Of course, in the final version, you dont have to travel to any specific place. Think of this as a morrowind with guns and futuristic armor. Also, the gun and goggles, etc. shown in the pics are not starting weapons, lol. You start off with a knife and a few pieces of bread.

Yeah, I make really crude editors for each game that just allows me to position objects and then converts the position and loading processes into dark basic code.
UPDATE
Ok, Ive added gravity and basic collision with newton wrapper and am in the middle of making it so you can shoot things and they will fly around I decided I wont animate any face for the guy in the beginning move, too hard, I will just have him wearing a head wrap or something. As far as enemy ai, I have it so they detect where walls are and turn when they are going to collide with one. I have walking, looking around, drawing weapon, and shooting animation for the average soldiers that you run into and walking and searching animations for the commanding officers of the imperial army. By the way, there are many different factions you can join. Beside the 3 major desert clans (Barren Hawks, Shadow Assailants and Sand Lurkers) there are 8 little minor factions that give you quests and if you can get to the upper continental plates, you can join the imperial army and become an elite in the special forces which is when you get the cool goggles and silenced rifle. You can also join the village idiot special forces in which you get to where pots on your head and muddy clothes and chuck cans at people and everyone will feel sorry for you because you cant help it. Pretty cool huh?
