Can someone define what this means? I'm a bit puzzled

I was wondering also - I'm making a Metroid remake. However, it does not star Samus Aran. It is also 3rd person istead of side on, and the weapons are not identical. Does this still qualify?

"retro" in the context of the dark basic retro competition refers to pre-playstation games according to rich so i'd guess making a game of metroid falls under that category.

Basically they want a game that is vaguely like a game over 5 years old. They don't care how 'retro' it is really,
all they want is a game to show off, so DB can say, Hey you
can make great stuff with db.

yeah i think thats mostly what they're hopeing here too fluffy

if you think about it they could've made a competition for like state of the art games to show off how quality DarkBasic can produce games - but by making it Retro, we don't really have to think of new ideas, we don't have to think of brand new characters ... really they just want us to actully finish games for the competition for once

as long as its obvious where its routes are sewn, then i don't think there should be a problem as you are suppose to be enhancing on an original idea.

however really this does need Rich's opinion considering he is like the "Retro Master" around here

Don't really have anything more to add to what you said to be honest. Just look at the examples already posted here in the forums, look at the ones I said "very cool" to! Then you'll know what we want.

Cheers,

You use the Retrometer(tm) It measures the level of "retro-ness" of anything it touches. For example Bell Bottoms rate a 10 on the Retrometer whereas DVDs rate a 1. It's measured in Retromic Units.

If you're worried about people not reconizing your remake, then add more Metroid elements. The ball roll, those bubble doors that open when shot, tons of platforms, and/or a plot about bounty hunters. From the sound of it, it's not an issue of "retroness" but originality.

metroid is only 6 or so retrometers. Pong scores a "10"

I think that games which currently already have 3d remakes of themselves get some retrometers taken off.

So if you redid Shinobe that wouldn't be as "retro" as if you redid Ninja Warriors, even though NW is newer.

Or if you do a 3d version of Mario, and it looks like Mario64 then you shouldn't get as many retro points as if you did it as 3d side-scroller.

Redoing a redone thing is only as retro as redoing it's latest version or the version the remake most resembles.

You know what I just thought of... Dig Dug. That would be a cool band name, man... "Dig Dug." Damn, I'm namin' my new band "Dig Dug." Who's in?

i'd say Pong was 9.8
and Space Wars or Asteroid would be 10

By my own standards, I suppose you are right. After all pong was recently remade. Galaxian. Now that would be a 10!

Oh hell, I thought I understood all of this but now I'm all confused. Can someone here clear this up for me pls,

Does the points for "retroness" counts on ...

1) ... how retro our game looks like(the one that we're doing now)? E.g Original is 2D then we're making it 3D. Now our game does not look retro at all. So, will our points for retroness be less?

OR

2) ... how retro the game we're remaking is? I.e We get more points for retroness if we make a sonic remake rather than a metal gear 2(Just An Example!) remake.

I'm remaking an old game(not saying what it is just yet) but in 3D. The levels are not the same as the original version of the game. Does this qualify for the comp? I'm asking this because I saw someone posting a screen in which he remodelled the levels just as in the original(in 2D) but in 3D. I'm just curious.

Thanks

Ok, if the game was made before the Playstation, it can be entered. Judging will not be baced on how retro the game is. I personally think you should keep some elements just for nostaja. If you're doing a mario remake use his old colors (dark green and rust red), if you're doing a punch out remake use a midi of the original music. The only thing they're going to judge is how good the game is, not hoe well it matches up with original.

My query was more along the lines of AsriCE's, how will "Retroness" bet judged? Is it just an "atmosphere" factor?

I'm just trying to quantify what I think is "retroness" It has nothing to do with the judging, nor does it reflect the opinions of anyone else at all. In other words I could be dead wrong, or there is no right or wrong. I'm pretty sure there is no spoon. How'm I gonna eat my cereal?

To me it's like does it capture that old school addictive game play and feel that older games had etc.

Hey I see Galaxians is up by somebody! Yay, I loved that game!

At a guess, I'd say the Retro definition was just a better way to spur the imagination from than just "Make a game", and the judging will basically comes down to this:

Make a good game.

Win.

I wouldn't go worrying if your game betrays the source of inspiration, especially if it does so in a positive way.
