I have just downloaded Milkshape3d, I was wondering how to load a model I make into DBC. I have Darkedit.

I am just starting with 3d (I have usually been working with 2d) so keep explanations simple please!

Well, I would make an object and save it as a .3ds or, if possible .x file (or find a converter from .3ds-.x) Then, open up "DarkEDIT" and use something like this:

Then, resize, move, change everything....that's just the general stuff. (I hope that's what you were asking for )

Weird...I can only save these objects as .ms3d .... where would i get a converter?

although i have never used milkshape, im guessing ms3d stands for "milkshape 3d" which is a file that only milkshape can read. what you need to do if you want to make a useful model is exportit. That gets rid of milkshape's claim on it and makes it an honest to god model. just like 3d canvas saves .3dc but exports .pov and blender saves as .blend but exports .x

Also, if you try to open a .3ds or .x file in milkshape it wont load, but if you import that model, it will transfer the data so milkshape can read it.

OK, thanks! I have successfuly loaded an object into DBC! YAY! Now, for another question. I used texture object in DBC, and it worked fine, but not how i wanted it to. What if i want some of the object to be this image and another part to be that image? Can I do that from Milkshape, or from DBC. Again Im brank spankin new to 3d so keep explanations simple. Thanks!

From DBC you can use texture object limb OBJECT NUMBER,LIMB NUMBER,IMAGE NUMBER. The image must be loaded like this: load image "IMAGENAME.EXTENSION",IMAGE NUMBER

There is a way to do it in Milkshape but it takes a while to figure out and I was starting to get it, but, my trial expired

20 US Dollars to register... If you don't register, you can still use it, you just can't save... so not much point using an unregistered copy after 30 days...

...maybe one day I'll finish a project

To texture in Milkshape, just click on a limb, and click on,... Textures, then click on new on the bottom, then click on another thing to browse for an image. THen click assign to assing the image to the object (limb). SOrry I'm not that specific, I can't remember the names of buttons.

@vgames
Yeah, that's what I got it to do. After it was all textured an nice, I had all of the .bmp texturing files in the same folder and it still wouldn't load the object with the correct texture (or any texture for that matter) when I loaded it to DB.

Oh, well, it doesn't matter now because by trial is up

Hmmm....should I pay 20 dollars? Is it worth it? Or is there something better?

Well, I like Milkshape and all and I would probably pay $20 (I need my new computer first or it would be in vain). But, I'm not much of a modeler so I don't know many other programs to buy that are that cheap.

20 Dollars for Milkshape was one of the best investments I've made, in my opinion... Would've been better if it was free though

blender is free.

but it does have alot of buttons and it is hard to use. it is also very sensitive so you will be hitting ctrl Z alot because of accidents.

Agreed, milkshape is a great way to learn some basic low poly 3-d modeling.. I also use gmax which is a free water down version of max...(need plugins to convert gamx to usable formats outside of the gamx environment)

If going with Milkshape you are gonna want a decent UV mapper/unwrapper, milkshapes uv tools are more of an afterthought than heart and soul...

I personally use lithunwrap which does a decent job...

These two are older version of some characters I made using Milkshape for models, lith for uv, and photoshop for texturing...

so in milkshape you need to texture the objects yourself?

That is correct, there are no built-in textures.... Also remember Milkshape is a Low Poly modeler with animation capabilities......

It's a great little app for DBP.

Blender may be free but is it worth the aggravation of learning the interface, it wasn't for me...

i feel for ya man. cant exactly tell what half of those buttons are for. also i noticed that it is hard to make it do what you really want. i think 3d canvas is good but at its price, i would go milkshape.

What Xeno is trying to say is that your model is not fluid looking, it's blocking and the individual parts do not line up correctly because they are indeed seperate parts....

To correct this, learn how to connect the vertices from one object to another and your parts will flow together better....

An example is the faces of my two characters in the post above, each face is actually two halfs joined together using the weld vertex command...they flow because each half then became one sold object...

hmm im a mech fan
if you will notice my av is the insigina for one of the great houses.

but along with your maddy (my fav mek) the head (or cockpit if you will) is too oval. take like a sphere and cut it in half and try that. the legs are a bit more angled, and the pelvis isnt as wide. some pics

Yeah, its not perfect. It was literaly my 5th model in my life. Using anything. Im proud of it no matter what you say. DO you play the "board" game? Or just a fan?

I'm not a huge fan of Kurita...I use mainly Dragons Fury and and Republic...

i play the computer game Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance and Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries. I have never read any of the books or played the board game, so i cant say im a fan of any house/faction. i just like the insignia for kurita. and davion.

PS the shots were taken from the mechlab in Mercenaries (medium detail though) with olive drab paint

Only when the last tree is cut, the last river is dammed, and the last spot of ground is paved will we realize we can't eat money

Enders shadow is good. A bit dry up front, but still a worthy read. I am currently reading Xenocide, (This title always reminds me of Xenocythe). I wouldnt read Xenocide until you read Speaker for The Dead. IT comes before Xenocide. And also is a really good book.
I havnt read Shadow puppets, but I did read the next book after Enders Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon. It was interesting...pretty good.
