Ive seen a thread like this at Cgtalk and decided that this community could benifit from it as well.

Basically, When we all model we all have special things we do sometimes program specific sometimes, sometimes it could apply to anyone. Either way the group benifits as a whole.

Post all you Hints and Tips you use everyday when modelling or animating. You might find a hint you like or someone will benifit from the one you posted. So I think this thread might be helpful.

The one I have is in 3ds Max. I always have my floating toolbars open for quick access to the array command and axis contraints. Very helpful. To open them in 3ds max go to customize -> show UI -> floating toolbars.

I made my own GUI in Cinema 4D, but then thought its nice, but the original just worked fine, I like to keep my space clean and tidy, and don't like things getting in the way, especially polygons, luckily Cinema 4D has the hide polygons feature, so that can be useful when box modelling, plus I like using 4 views ports, one detailed perspective views, one isosparm/wireframe top, side and front views. As for modelling techniques, I usually use Polygon modelling, but CGTalkers said I would prefer it a lot more if I learnt to box model in organics, so I am, and I'm doing alright so far

I agree with what you got there except I like the original UI knowing me I would f it up and not like it. So I leave it as is.

I like the original UI of C4D, I just changed it, and thought meh, nothing special, may as well click reset , so I am using the original

You know artists construct their drawing in shapes like cones, spheres and cubes before they start sketching an outline. Try to do that in 3D. Say if you building a character, or a gun. Use boxes to try and get the proportions right before you start modeling. Its easier to visualise what your trying to model if you have a rough guide line.

Here is a blender tip: I just discovered this, when constraining an objects movement/rotation or scale, press the x y or z key twice to use the objects normals instead of global coordinates. So, basically press the constraint key once if you want it to move globally(according to the world's axis) or press it twice if you want it to move in the direction its pointing. This is useful for moving say, a rocket straight in the direction its pointing, scaling a lightsaber blade...and so on. Before this i had to click that button that changes from global to normal, and it took time.

Explain to me why some people pay money for 3d software? Its not 3d till its been blended. wwww.blender3d.org

milkshape - using ctrl+n (snap together) when working in vertex mode...saves me tons of time by not having to line up all those pretty little dots for weld command....

if you can customize everything so it's easier to use, if you have two monitors it might be an idea to have the viewport on one screen and all the tools on the other, same goes with photo editing apps

I have a few modelling ideas for certian things

For High poly stuff.

Character modelling;
Box Modelling (Poly modelling works well, but is a wee bit tedious)

Car Modelling;
Polymodelling (this is how I do it, asked on a forum and Sspike confirmed it was a good way to do it as he does it)

Achitecture;
Box modelling

Plants;
Various ways, but box modelling and use alpha mapped objects for the leaves.

Hair;
Box modelling + Alpha maps, if you have the hair feature in your app, use that.

Terrian:
I use planes and a 'magnet tool' which works like Geoscape.

Fire;
Depending on your application, generally I would use a particle system, either emmit red and yellow visible lights, but red and yellow objects work too but don't give off light.

For those luckier people, can simply use the light object and make it into a fire by using 'Noise' I use Wave noise in cinema 4D and play with the contrasts to get the right effect.

Blood:

Metaball + Spheres + Particle emmiter, gives a nice blood spurting effect

here's one for milkshape (and probably many others) if you have a side/front/top etc sketch of what you want to model, scan it in and set it as a backdrop on the corresponding 2d view, this works well with photographs etc too.
this makes judging proportions much easier and if you model like me (i place vertices individually then join them up with the face tool) you can place the vertices along edges on your background image then it's like a big dot-to-dot puzzle.
this may not seem very efficient but it is much easier and faster than trying to use primitives.

when I make terrain. I use a diplace map on a 20 by 20 plane. thats what made the terrain in my compo entry.
