I was tryin to make a 2d side scroller like metal slug and wondering where to start. For my first question, how do i make levels and sprites show up in dbpro?

read the code base or maybe some tutorials plenty of code to get you off your feet there.

i programmed a game a while ago no sprites all basic 2d based circles and lines and dots... fighting game... you go around a fight ghosts... blood too... swinging your pike animation.... blocking..... jumping... and it was from a birds eye view... i did it in DBC.. i got DBPRO now

I was wondering, can you use Dark Basic to make an animation program? I don't know where I can get one for free, and I can't afford to buy one.

Yes you can! Using built in graphic commands, ink rgb, and etc.
It really depends on your skill of course.
