Which is better, and why...?

When to use .dds, .tga or .jpg

I guess, I assume, that they all have their strengths, but what is the best format and in what application...?

Thanks.

well you have to use ether .dds or .tga when it comes to textuers in FPSC. and .BMP for the thumbnails of the objects.

I do textuers really good.

dds is a compressed format which is good for games, but some paint programs can't open or save them. GIMP (the program I use) has a plugin for dds files but it doesn't seem to like the ones in FPSC.

tga and dds files can have an alpha channel which is good when doing anything with transparency (like hud items, decals).

tga files are converted to dds by FPSC when a game is tested or compiled, so tga is a good format to start with. Pretty much any paint program can make them including GIMP which is free.

jpg is another general use compressed format that can look ugly if compressed too much, so be careful. Generally I don't think jpg is needed in FPSC as dds is better.

This is a pretty basic rundown. Someone else might have better explanations.

So it sounds like .dds is best when it comes to textures.
I have the Nvidia .dds plug-in for my (and yes I own it) Photoshop.
There are a lot of options for this format.

Any help on these options would be great.

Cheers.

Can't help you with that unfortunately. Maybe someone from TGC could tell you the this.

If you use tga you don't have to worry because FPSC converts it automatocally.

I do find tga files the easiest to use for texture, the engine converts it anyway. For all other stuff I'm using jpg, unless you need transparency, then you need to use tga.

You can use png too, but NOT with the StoryZone object.... that will result in a crash!

If I do use FPSC to create a FPS? What's a FPS supposed to be anyway???
