this is where A* (A-star) somes in.. It basically check which coords are navigatable, and which aren't, and works from there.

It's a very complicated technique for AI.

Never thought about tackling A* before, but after quickly reading through that it doesn't look so scary anymore.

That's just chasing the player, doesn't really avoid walls, read SvenB's link and you'll understand
