Could someone point me in the right direction to look for information about creating an X file? For example, if I was creating a modeling program with DBP and used DB objects but wanted to export the object to an X file, how would I go about it? I'm not asking for exact code or anything, but I've seen editors made by people here and know it can be done and just need the proper intel. Any help at all is appreciated!

First:

MAKE MESH FROM OBJECT new mesh no, existing object no.

Then:

SAVE MESH filename,mesh no.

NOBODY has a forum name as stupid as Darth Shader. I do.

BTW. Files are saved in the TEXT X format (the type of .X which DBP likes best)

Is there anyway to save frames of animation doing the same way, as well? Or is that not doable?

Have you tried? It might export the animation for you (it's part of the x file).

Unfortunately, I can't try anything just quite yet. I'm over in Afgahnastan (I'm in the Army) and I can't download anything onto these computers. I haven't touched DB since 2000 but want to get back into it. I've been designing a game for the past month now and once I get back stateside I'm going to start it once I get back into the states, but I'm doing all the design docs as detailed as I can beforehand.

I'm designing an editor to go along with the game. I want it to be completely flexible with all the objects being completely customizable (complete vertex control) but to do that I have to export them to a file format, X being DB's favourite. I also like to be able to animate scenes within the editor to make AVI's (which is possible in DB if I remember correctly... am I wrong?) but also want to make it be able to export animated models. Kinda like a mini-3DSMAX made in DB. Universal editor for maps, models, cutcenes, whatever...

But before I make the specs for the editor, I'm researching what DBP (never heard of it till recently) is capable of. If I had a copy of the help file with desscriptions of all the commands and what they do, I wouldn't have to ask so many questions

My question about the animation... from what I know of X animations, they're all done frame by frame. If I had a model of a character, with all the limbs attached onto them, how would I set frame1 to current position, then change the position and set frame2 to (now) current position? Is there a "Set frame" command? I really wish I had a complete function list with descriptions

Thanks for all the help, though!

Okay... new question, old post

Does the method of saving X files above also save texture data?

Dude, I'm not far from you. I'm in Kuwait right now, and I'm downloading things like heck. I love being in control of the computer networks here in country. This is great. Right now I'm downloading Truespace 5.2 full version..... It was about time I bought it. I'm getting tired of people telling me I should go warez, I love my legit software.

By the way there is command in DBPro that converts .3ds file to .x : 3ds2x 3dsfile as string, xfile as string, but unfortunately it isn't available now
