using 3dmax and there's a particular pillar I want to model. Not sure what the easiest way would be to make the shape. Thoughts or suggestions?

looks like extrude along spline for the tentacle like things sticking out then a normal/diplacement map for the design.

ohh my.... For the flair(s) build them flat first then bend them after your happy with the look.... Personally I would use a nice texture to make the flairs detailed but you could try and build each feathered section if your up to it...

any hoot - good luck

I'd use my this technique: Lathe, adjust vertices, extrude, adjust verticies.

And walah! (Sounds a lot easier then it is)

id say a mixture of heckno and Xeno's methods should do the trick, depending on what programs your more comfortable with,(2d or 3d) and what poly count your looking for

lathe sounds like a good idea. The intricate detail on each feather will probably be a texture. Hmm, now i look closer and see some scrolls at the top as well. I'm not concerned with polycount. A single fluted pillar in my scene is about 4k polys. thx guys
