milkshape is great for simplistic boned animation, but if you want to get real nitty gritty blender is wonderful if you take a good solid week to learn it. Im loving blender more and more, but the animation part i havn't goten the hang of yet. Milkshape is free for 30 days, i ow it but i forgot the password thing and i had to re install windows.
anim8or i got sick of, ive never really seen a whole lotta great stuff come from it..its like a maya wanna be haha.

Free being the keyword - Blender is the what you want....

once you get past the interface you will find it to be a great little program for the price

Gmax is better but It's not suitable for darkbasic without additional plugins for conversion.... Gmax is a water downed version of max...(think it is max version 4 or 5, max being at version 8 now)

Not sure if there is way to get the gamx animations over to x format so maybe gmax doesn't fit your request of model w/animations

Are you saying you got an animated model from blender into darkbasic? If so do tell lol.
Aside from exporting anims...blender is the way to go. It is fast catching up with industry standard tools and I believe that it will surpass them. It's gotta be the only free 3d package that has a fluid simulator However that isn't really used for games lol.

Im sick of Master Chief soo...ooga booga!!
Explain to me why some people pay money for 3d software? Its not 3d till its been blended. wwww.blender3d.org

It's in the modeller's list, but I mention a possible solution here since you seem to be limited in your search skills...

You can use DoGA CGA for designing models and exporting them to SUF format. Metasequoia LE for tweaking low poly models or creating from scratch. And, Cyberdelia for animating them and saving the files tp Direct X format. And, they're all essentially free.

Let me make that an active link for you...

It's the third post down from the top.

I tried Blender, trueSpace3.2, gmax, Lightray3D, metasequoia, ModelMagic, ppModeler, Hamapatch, anim8or and Wings3D and none of them exports animation properly. (Maybe Blender does, but I just don't get the interface).
Maybe JTEdit. Couldn't get it to work on my pc...

The only program I'm sure of and isn't too pricey is MilkShape($20).

take a look at PaceMaker... it's a fresh new face in character animation arena, and it's the easiest program i've seen to date that will get an character rigged to a skeleton, help with assigning vertices to joints, and facilitate animating it...

it exports to .X and .B3D right now, so you'll need something to convert to .DBO or .X format (i use Ultimate Unwrap which also doubles as my UV editor for skinning)...

it's not free though... about $37 US, and there's a 7 day fully functional trial available, so you can get a feel for it and what it outputs... check out the site --> http://www.GOddysey.com

good luck...

It's quite funny that you listed W3D because it doesnt do animation. So naturally it wouldnt export animation properly. Although I think W3D is great for modeling, you just need a second app for animation.

[edit] Oh yeah...and another app for vert by vert modeling. Right on!

Ah well...

I use it because it's the only program I know how to edit UV.
