You could model that using bones. It would be easier if you had something like "scroll limb texture" like in DB.

I'm not sure whether you could animate objects along a path and still expect the exporter to handle it - it would need some experimentation.

If it were me, I would make the teeth "jiggle" to fake the impression of the chain going round. You should get the same effect as a moving chain with a little care.

Oooh jiggle. You are indeed wise.

You could also make them move 1 step and then back which would give the impression of moving forward around the chiainsaw.

omg i dont know how you knew...but that is the exact thing i am doing right now

it is indeed possible.

what you have to do is after you have your path animation set up, you have to have all of the teeth be separate objects, and you have to convert the path animation to keyframe animation and delete the path...

that is how i did it anyway...

kinda sucks that we both will have a chainsaw though...

i thought i would be the only one

You might be able to bake the path animation in max to a normal key based one. Been a while since I used max so I'm not sure.

You'd probably need bones for every tooth though, so it would be messy.

Moving teeth...

I say exactly what's on my mind, like "Imagine your grandpa in a speedo" or "I eat Jell-O while waxing the table" and my personal favorite, "I drink bathtub water"

haha, I want a chainsaw..but i want to be able to cut limbs off, like cut a leg off and have them either crawl around in pain and then you finish them off with a chainsaw to the head, or if the enemies are zombies, they should crawl after you .

You would have to be able to spawn the limb and also maybe use an alternate mesh or some really clever animation/alternate texturing.

If you could spawn other entities, you could just "kill" the original zombie and spawn a less healthy crawling one right there.

It's not going to be an actual chainsaw, but more of a chainsword. I'm thinking about doing a game based on the Warhammer 40k universe.
On another note, can you have a "pull out" animation on all of your guns? I think it would be cool to have him start up the chainsword when you switch to it.

...oh yeah I guess that would be jiggling. Jiggling is what the red baithing suit chick in Soul Calibur does when she fights.
