Zeke, it's a dbc game. Hey zzz, that gravity demo looks cool, did you make it? If so, do you mind sharing a little knowledge?

Uhm. DBPro? Kiddo, thing like this don't get made in DBPro (with the exception of Final Exodus and Geisha House, and maybe, in the nearby future, Pirates of Port Royale)... This is DBC all the way!

Ooh, nice! The grayscale is a nice effect, too. Not very noticeable in the screens, but I think it will be when you're actually bringing up the menu in-game.

I'm not actually a Kiwi, I just randomly thought it up one day.

And - quick lesson for me - whats the diff between dbc and dbpro? I thought dbpro was better (costed more, had pro at the end of the name) but please correct we with detail, please.

Mwah, I'm not sure which is better. DBPro has support for a lot of fancy things, but personally, I like DBC better. Maybe UDT's would've been nice.

I'd recommend DBPro, though, just because I'm odd.

Other than that, DBC was the original Dark Basic, and dbpro is he current one. I find DBC a bit more usable myself, but the main reason to use it is to see how far you can push a game gameplay and graphic wise with no shaders and with a slow language.

Finishing this game+what bizarguy said is why I´m still using dbc.
Except that gravity demo, which reminds me...

@Satchmo:
Now I will answer your question!
Yes, I did make that gravity demo, in dbp.
I´m not working on it currently but it works better now then it did back when that video was released. Now movement is really smooth and you can play the game via a LAN connection with some friends, with chat and all that.
The thing is I don´t really remember how I made it work, but is was hell to code it, I didn´t use any dll for special rotation(dll´s used are sparkys and tempest for collision and network).
I just used commands like turn object left, and things like that.
In Sweden we call this kind of code "fulkod".

I've just played the demo for this and I must say I'm really impressed. It looks to be one of the best games made in DBC, and it beats the majority of DBP games. Well done.

Remember the gravity demo was written in dbp, anyway it´s possible but hard and the result is not perfect. You may get a better result by using ezrotate or something like that(not sure though).

I didn´t want to edit my last post, since I´m bringing you a nice update!

The new pause menu is getting near completion, so here are some screenshots:

This is what the menu will look like early in the game when you haven´t got any items. As you know, that´ll change fast:

When you have collected all items the menu will look like this.

You´ll be able to change the registered key for an item by just holding your mouse pointer over the item and press the key you wish to use. The 3d key in the corner will simulate being pushed and change the letter on it. If you press a mouse button instead, a 3d mouse will appear instead. It´ll also animate and even highlight the button you pressed, you can also use both left and right mouse buttons for one item.

While you hold the mouse cursor over an item, soulhunter will use that item to the right while you can read some information about the item to the left.

The lower buttons let you save your game and settings, close the menu and continue, return to the main menu, quit the game.

If you choose to return to the main menu or quit, you´ll be given the option to save, quit or return to the pause menu. Nice, huh?

Whoa, looks great, keep up the good work, when did you start DBC?

Plus, what level maker are you using?

I can't believe you even have a store with game merchandise, great job on this...

Thanks.

@DrewG:
Do you mean when I started programming in dbc?
I bought it about 3-4 years ago, after I had read about it in a magazine.

[Edit]
I actually use magicworld(which you can download from this site), but I really want to make my own level editor. Maybe that´ll be my next project?

Yeah, the store is kinda dead. You can make your own for free, I just did it for fun, I don´t expect it to give me loads o´ ca$h...

Thanks, I've found your project VERY inspirational after watching a couple of videos, from early dev. to now, I mean, this looks like something I'd buy for the PS2... Serious... Maybe not recent PS2 releases, but similar, looks great, glad it's going to be free...

I look forward to more updates!

PS - What did you use to model your main character with animations?

Whoa... DrewG, does that feel good, now? Being positive can be good, you see? Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy from the inside, doesn't it?

I'm not sure about the dialogue(?) background with all its colors. It's too busy and colorful for me, and makes the text hard to read.

Besides that, it's amazing!

@the rabbi

Not exactly, I mean, if I knew zzz in real life, and knew he wasn't anything sick or gross (not implying you are) then possibly..

Ah who am I kidding, I feel somewhat warm and fuzzy...

And now offense dude, but if you can write perfect english, with punctuation and all... never mind... I don't want to start a war.

eDIT:

@ ZZZ

Just finished up level 1, then stopped playing, it was EXCELLENT... I mean, one of the best Dark Basic games I've played... Seriously, it looks like DBP work. Anyway, great job, I was pretty shocked, my only suggestion is to make it so moving the mouse left and right controls the camera, that'd perfect the game.

@Nancy DrewG, the camera does do that, if you press the "c" key and select the mouse camera.

I'm liking the menu. I agree with rami that there's a large amount of noise, but it looks extremely functional.

Also zzz, I'm going to steal your style of level design for my next project, which is a test run of a larger one.

@zzz, I have a question: How do you get Sparky's to work in DBC? I dowloaded it for dbpro, is it the same dll? And also, where do I put the dll in the dbc folder?

You put the DBC Sparky DLL in the folder where your source is, I guess. You do need to distribute it along with your final product, or embed it through DarkExplorer or so (as long as that works, it fails 10/11 times...)

Yes.

Quote: "And how did you texture matrixes in Magic World without it freezing up on you?"

I don´t use matrices in soulhunter, but I did use them in "the digger". Magicworld would freeze when I selected certain areas on a n image, I´ll include an example(the red area would cause MW to freeze, click the view button).

@Bizarguy:
Quote: "How do you get Sparky's to work in DBC? I dowloaded it for dbpro, is it the same dll? And also, where do I put the dll in the dbc folder?"

No, it´s not the same dll. I use v1.0 made specifically for dbc, it should be found somewhere on these forums. Then put the dll in your game´s folder and include the dll with the final exe.
I haven´t had any problems with it.

______

The menu is coming along fine, I reduced the colour and noise as you suggested. Right now I´m working on the options sub-menu.

Here´s a new screenie, can you see what´s wrong with it?

Hi, I just want to tell you that progress hasn´t stopped
but I recently moved and I don´t have an internet connection
at the new place yet. However, I decided to put som screenies
on a usb-stick and upload them from another comp,
but first I´ll answer some old questions...

Mistrel:
Quote: "If I alt-tab out and back in the screen flashes black and white and I can't see anything."

That´s an error in DBC, however in vista this doesn´t occur.
Why? I have no idea...

icy:
Quote: "Hey, if you didn't use matrices, what program did you use to make your level?"

Quote: "3ds max"

And here are the screenies:

This is the new(and probably final) design for the pause-menu, from here you can select the map which will let you warp to a previous level. From the pause menu you can also access the options(currently in development).

These are some pictures of an experiment to make soulhunter´s hat
to act more "natural". Since dbc doesn´t support bones I have to use memblocks, this isn´t such a hassle as long as you´re using a simple shape in which you know the id of all vertices...
And, OMG, look at that haircut!

A-mazing. Looks much better now, although I don't really get what I assume to be the map.

Sincere thumbs up, I'm so glad you're not letting this go flat just yet.

The area on the map that´s selected is in focus, the rest is blurred.
If the mouse cursor is moved to another location on the map, another level will be in focus. Then you just click to warp.
