This is a work in progress, although I'm not 100% sure which direction to take this project. My current idea is a resource management game where you have to run planet earth (on a VERY basic level). Things like mining ore, etc and research will help you build a decent planet with possible defence and offence? (satelite defence, ground defence, etc).

I also really enjoyed the UFO:Enemy Unknown game and am thinking a few features lifted from this - like UFO's attacking ,etc.

Currently I have an earth and the ability to figure out which bit of earth you are clicking on (allbeit slightly off for some reason).

Some screenshots:
No bump mapping:

And the game download:
http://www.thingy-ma-jig.co.uk/Earth.sfx.exe (12Mb)

Notes: This EXE is a self extracting archive, nothing else needed there.. But your graphics card will need some kind of pixel shader as I use the built in bump mapping commands.

Hi,

That sounds like a very interesting idea. Maybe you could make it two player and have them play against each other, like who can build up more resources before the other.

Those screen shots look nice and I wish you luck on completing this.

Looks really good! Also, great idea.
But i can't try it, the display is over 1024, and my monitor can't support higher than 1024. I also tried to recompile it with 1024, 768, 32 but it says at line 118 command is not reconized. Can you compile a 1024, 768, 32 version please?

Thanks for the comments

I'm just uploading a 1024 x 768 version to my site, the URL is:
http://www.thingy-ma-jig.co.uk/Earth_1024x768.sfx.exe

As of posting this, it has about 7 mins left to upload. I was going to post when it was done, but I just ordered a curry and it needs collecting

EDIT: As of this edit - its 4 mins.

wow, great job. Runs smooth here, but the top of the earth's clouds' sphere, there's a lot of seams. Instead of that, all is awesome.

cheers

I've got a few days off work owed to me, so I think I'll be doing some more work on this after this weekend.

I was actually quite impressed by the speed I got from it on my PC. I get about 1300fps on a 7800GTX and Athlon 4400+ X2.

@Skalex - I think the reason for that is because I'm using the default "sphere" object which has all the triangles at the top and bottom converging on one point which causes all kinds of texture wierdness. I might have to make a specific "earth and atmosphere" object. It probably needs to be made more like a very high res "football" (soccor ball) shape, using lots of tesselated hexagons, although when you make hexagons out of triangles, you'll end up with lots of convergance on single points :-(

I also see a horrible seam in the middle screenshot - need to look into why on earth that happened.... Looks like the bump/normal mapping made the sphere lose its normals :-( I'm starting to think the best way for this to work would be to find a decent and easy to use Normal Shader from the Shader thread. Anyone know any off hand?

Cheers for the comments guys and gals

Nick
