i got max 6 and installed (and registered) it however...
i get stuck on the loading screen saying that its loading mentalray.dlz (a very small file, from my understanding it's the MentalRay default plugin for max) and freezes, any suggestions?

Lol...i forgot that other modellers actually spend enough time loading to have a screen for it :p
My suggestion would be to do as your avatar suggests :p
Im assuming you tried a demo of it first i hope? and if so, did it freeze in the demo?
Email their support and see if they know anything about their product
And...if none of that works...get blender!

Also, does it actually freeze(mouse stops) or does it just keep "loading", if so, how long did you wait? Reinstall maybe? Read sys reqs?

I hope they give refunds lol.

EDIT: LOL...i just noticed for the first time that i have 4 "w"s in the link in my sig

Im sick of Master Chief soo...ooga booga!!
Explain to me why some people pay money for 3d software? Its not 3d till its been blended. wwww.blender3d.org

reinstalling might help, otherwise it might be caused by a scratched disk

sounds like the best thing to do, the chances of a max user on here knowing is much more unlikely than a tech support knowing

So did just the loading freeze? or the pc. Mental ray does need some networking/tcpip setup, but just the default windows setup, you dont have to fiddle with it. This much I guess, as why IE is a required install for max6 and since I use zone alarm, it pops up when I launch max, if I deny it then the mentalray plugin does not load. Max continues to load fine though.

I have 3ds Max 8, I get an error like that but it doesn't freeze and I can do everything normally. Mental ray has something to do with rendering.

Hey, I'm still a newb, so expect lots of questions from me.

It has quite a lot to do with rendering i think Anyway, personally i think that for a >$1000 program, if the loading doesn't work, its one hell of a rip off. Have you contacted their tech support yet?

Mentalray is a rendering engine. Unless you really need it, max's standard renderers are fine.

When I launch max, zonealarmpro pops up saying max is trying to access the internet. Its not really, just hooking itself up to the network for some ip/dns settings which it uses (im paraphrasing from a long techie explanation which I got lost myself). So I just click no if im not using mentalray. - Probably doesnt make much difference, just make me feel better when its not loading up stuff I dont need.

Did you reinstall? Might be the installation of the plugin got corrupted. Its been awhile since I installed it. Cant remember if you can opt not to install it. If all else fails, ask your supplier (they can be helpful sometimes) if you dont want to use up the your allocated disctreet support.

Hmmmm. Maybe its not Mentalray. Its the last plugin to get loaded, so maybe its loaded, just that max freezes after that. I guess the usual checklists apply.

1. Update video drivers
2. Update DirectX drivers
(This one is very very funky. There was once I was working on AfterEffects. I exited to do some stuff in another app. Ran AE again and it would die after loading. Unistalled,Reinstalled, same thing. I just ran the dx installer, as part of my usual steps to take then all was fine)
3. I cant remember if on install if the video settings are in software mode. In Start-Programs-Discreet there's Change graphics mode. Try that.

well its likely your menatal ray files were just corrupt or something as during loading all it does is load the menu settings and things for it, doesnt *cast rays* while loading or snything, and mr is very usefull it would be foolish to leave that as your solution.

You should also update your software:

Have a nice day,

I don't think you should have bought Max at this time, I mean its a rip off, especially if it don't work, and considering Maya just bought them out....I would expect a declining price now

Yes. Do update. ServicePack at least. 7.5 Update fixes quite a few things and has enhancements. If you are using 8, well... There are known issues and Discreet are working to fix them. We are having some problems at my workplace (just the occasional crash, when pushed alittle far) but no major issues.

By the way Sep. Autodesk acquired Alias.

that happens with the majority of version of max

autodesk are buying alias out, as far as i know it hasn't been finished yet

a lot of people are saying how they will combine them together - i personally think this will be a great loss and you'll probably find they won't - they work too differently under the hood, nd the market loss it would result in would be stupid - i reckon maya will be tailored more towards films and max more for games
