Two over-weight footballers, without ice skates, on a load of ice, trying to play football. Two player only (so you need to have a friend). 5.68MB download. Extremely playable (but not on your own obviously).

Features:

-Fast paced action
Simple to get into, but with lots of practice you can truly master the game
and learn to dribble, defend and play strategically. You might even be able
to figure out how to shoot straight ... if you're lucky.

-Two player action
Play head to head against your mate, and totally humiliate him/her/it.

-3 Match lengths
Choose between Tiddler(2 minuteS), Stint(4 minutes) or Epic(8 minutes)

-Instant Replays
Instant replays play back in slow motion when a goal is scored.
Alternatively, hit the spacebar when you want to replay a moment of genius.
Instant replays can be customized to short or long from the menu.

-Breakbeat choons
Phat menu music and instant replay music to keep the mood quirky.

-Detailed sound FX
Many variations for in-game sounds, as well as goal commentary and in game
banter when the players hurt each other.

Blue Player:
(Forwards) W
(Left) A
(Right) D

Red Player:
Cursor Keys

ESC from Menu Quits Game
ESC during game, exits to menu
ESC during a replay ends replay

Spacebar during game starts replay

Tips and Tricks:

To master the skills of Big Fat Ice Football and always ensure victory over
your inferior friends, try out these techniques:

-Always stay behind the ball (i.e.Keep the ball between you and your
opponents goal). It's much harder to do then it sounds, but if you're not
behind the ball, you can't defend your goal and you can't shoot at your
opponents goal.

-Don't constantly hold down forward else you'll run around like a headless
chicken and never quite get to your destination. Lean to release forward,
slide and turn, then get back on the power.

-As soon as your opponent makes a break for your goal, get yourself inside
your goal, to effectively close off half of the goal, then make your
defence from there.

-Big Fat Ice Footballers turn slowly (probably because of their rediculous
weight and lack of ice skates). Because of this, you'll be wise to learn to
anticipate the path of the ball, and start turning as soon as possible.
Generally, the person who gets moving first will get the edge over the
game.

-The footballers, with their spherical bouncey bodies have a perfect
elastic collision with hard objects ... such as brick walls. Use this to
your advantage. If you're facing a wall, and you need to go in the opposite
direction, bounce into it to give yourself a head start before you turn.

There are many other little stategies to become a Premier Division fat
bastard. The game itself may be simple, but the techniques you use to win
can be just as complex as a less colesterol-packed sports game. Figure them
out yaself.

Final Note:
The idea for this game came from an internet flash game I played once.
Some credit has to go there for the game idea.
And finally, don't complain that there isn't a backwards key! It would've
taken 5 minutes to add backwards functionality, but that would've taken out
all of the challenge.

Forgot to mention. The game runs at the set 60 FPS fine on a lower spec machine at P700 256MB Geforce2.

Anyone know how to make those image tags work?

I tried to run the game and the app appears briefly on the taskbar then disappears and nothing happens

Whoops sorry - Another program I was running had somehow changed the security settings on my temp folder. Now fixed.

That was good fun but can I suggest that you make the game at little bit faster, it was a little too slow.

If you wanted to improve it maybe you could just have a few blocks lying around the arena which are powerups, eg SPIKES (perfect traction, no sliding), SPEED, POWER etc. that last for say 10 seconds.

and the Instant replays were a nice touch, I like the cutesy sound FX as well

Some of the images have black borders around them that I don't think were intentional - use transparent PNGs to sort this out

Great game, but being on my own today the best I could do was defeat myself 2-1... It's crying out for an AI.

yeah, gotta agree with both sides here, A.I and power-ups apart from that, the games great!

Ow...

You got the "awds" controls

that's very bad, If I hold any 3 of the buttons, I won't be able to move, and that's not very fair

No I'm not - I am not that stupid - I didn't mention the error message that pops up briefly then disappeared. As I said, I had problems with my temp folder due to running a buggy SourceForge project executable at the same time.

Sorry Darth, at the time I wrote that only your first post was evident and I noted that the installer operated in a similar manner to your first post. Only after posting did your replies then appear which clarified what was really happening, sorry.

hehe. Thanks for the feedback guys.

What points to reply to? Well, I'm a university student, so I have load of other like-minded people around, so all the games I make are generally 2 player. After all, multi-player games are the most fun, usually. An A.I. would be cool, for sure, but I really doubt if it could ever live up to the skills of a human player without some serious seriously clever algorithms. After a good 20 or so EPIC games against a human player, you'll get to the stage where you're pulling off long range goals after bouncing off walls, or playing it around a player, then charging through and burying it ... or my personal favourite - playing it off the wall near the goal, knowing full well when your opponent charges back to defend his goal, he'll accidentally head it into his own goal. That's what phases me out about A.I. I should give it a go though ... maybe my next move after my current project.

As for the AWD thing. Well you shouldn't ever be holding more than 2 buttons at once! There's only 3 controls in total for each player. I've played this game for a long time with many different people, and I have to say that there have never been any keyboard lock-ups. Maybe a P4 with a PS/2 keyboard does something to relieve this, but it seems to not be a problem.

As for power ups, they're in the works.

Simple AI solution that should be effective:

Firstly, enable your dude to walk to a waypoint. Do this with a simple left/right shortest turn direction routine, and tell him when to apply the throttle based upon distance to waypoint.

Now position the waypoint... typically this will be a 2 stage process, step one: get to a position very near the ball based upon direction to the opposing goal and position of the ball - once there, run wildly at the ball.

If the AI ends up on the wrong side of the ball you might want to add an AI stage that moves him back without running through the ball.

Should be fairly effective and easily written in an hour or so...
