Yup. Much lower poly than the previous swords.

File is the sword as a .3ds file.

Do you use mesh smoothing and subdivision on the hilt and handle?

It looks like you do, and I'm thinking that's where your poly's come from.

"Mommy - where do poly's come from?"
"From mesh smooth, dear. I'll explain when you're older."

You'd be able to save a tonne of poly's if you didn't use meshsmooth and instead beveled a few edges here and there. Mind you, if you want it to look THAT smooth, then you're stuck with the polys ;D

What kind of sword is it? 1h, 2h, hand and a half, broad, long, short etc?

It's a dagger. And I know smooth is adding a lot of polys to it. I manually got rid of about 120 by deleting unneccesary edges. Explain beveling as I've never used it before. Heard of it, but never actually used. I might just make a seperate cylinder for the handle, and play around with it until it looks nice, and then add it to the end of the original model. (I'd connect/merge the verts but Wings wouldn't let me)

[edit] and I wouldnt bother to smooth if the handle wasnt so square...seeing as I started with a square it only makes sense that it is square.

I imported the sword into max and its says 612 tris. hmmmm.

As a game model, the yellow bit (hilt?) as too many polys. Even if you are within your polybudget, you moght want to spread it around a little. I also noticed from the top view. It looks like you made the handle from a cylinder a scaled it to almost, you might have scaled it a little to much as the handle is thinner than the blade or is that the design.

You might want to try out what Tinkergirl said and bevel/chamfer the edges. What this does, in a very loose sense , is it will split up an edge and create a polygon in between. This gives a sharp edge a soft look ie.beveled.

Ok not a clear explanation. I'll throw up some pics if you need. Your're using wings are you?

Oops, forgot to view along the y axis to scale the handle and hilt. What I do is build everything off of the blade. I am using Wings though, and pictures of course always help.

Ok I've never used Wings before. Just gave it a whirl. It works like Nendo, so I could get around a little. I've created a little slideshow just showing a bit of modelling in Wings.
Its in flash format (swf), so you'll need a flash player or flash plugin for your browser (included a html for browser viewing).

Attached download. Zip file is 472kb.

ps. Im not expert, so no crits on the slideshow k.

Most 3D modelling programms I have used don't have the bevel feature. I discovered bevel and CSG substract in GTK Radiant.
Of course, I've only tried free and really cheap ones.
I couldn't afford 3DS max...
I use MilkShape3D, the best $25 modeller you can find.

sweet. Much cleaner. Better proportions too. Might not need those polys in the middle of the handle. Unless you're gonna do something with them.

How many polys is it now, altogether?

Dont worry bout it. A matter of choice. Here's a sample of what I would do. Its about the same polycount, just put polys in different places.

I removed the polys in the middle of the handle and the subtle bevel and the end of the handle. I added polys at the ends of the hilt and tip of the sword, just to round it up a little.

The wireframe.

if your modeling program can weld verts than thats a good way to remove some excess polys

To sort of weld 2 verts together in wings. - Well, first of, i think the way Wings works is that the object you are modelling needs to maintain its structure as a contiguous mesh. I assume this as I cant find an option to delete a polygon. So you cant say take a cube, then remove the top poly. You can collapse the top poly which then gives you a pyramid...I think.....
So working with that in mind, to weld 2 verts together, they need to share the same edge, thus you would collapse the edge to create a single vert out of the two.

umm yeah somthing like that.

How about I just wait until I can get an extra program to import my models to so I can weld verts that way? hmm...
