I'm just wondering how to do pitch black areas like someones have in their games? Any help is welcome!

Read the PDF Manual.
On page 89 you will see AMBIENCE=X in a list of Actions for FPI Scripts.
Page 45 explains Light Markers as well.
That's how you do it.

You may even find examples of code if you search the forums.
I'm pretty sure this is explained in detail somewhere already.
