The basic rule is that you only post a team request when you have gotten to a point where you are almost certain that the game will be finished. You have to post screens of your game as it is at that moment, media or no media. Demos are good too. You have to explain what your game is about, explain exactly what it is you need help with( if you need models, give lots of details, reference pcts, poly limit, style...ect). And then maybe someone will help. Just keep in mind that you are really asking people to do a job that usually pays a fair amount of money, for free.

Ya, if you suck a modelling, and rock at programming, get a lot of work done on the coding, then ask for models.
