Hi there,

My first post but I have been here for ages looking around, we have a game in development at the moment called Prisoner 606. Just before I ask for help, I just want to say that there are a lot of talented developers showcasing thier work here so well done to you guys, look forward to testing out some of the forthcoming releases.

Ok, I want to know if we are able to use music / sounds from another game without permission from the developer if we do not sell ours. Ie, if we make a freeware game and use a score from MOH for example, can we be slapped with a copyright charge even though we are not making money and we credit them for the music? Anyone have any experience with this at all?

Thanks in advance.

Sy.

IF you intend to upload it anywhere, like make your game available to download, then you could run into trouble.

If you only intend to distribute your game to friends via CD, then it should'nt be a problem, because EA would simply never know.

Cool, thanks for getting back to me on that, its just that we would be able to get the game out to people in half the time if we could use existing music from other games, its not a problem though, I have a mate who is a composer so its not an issue getting a score for each level and the main screen, its just hastle and obviously means asking for a favour as we wont be selling the game once complete. Ive heard that for instrumental music, if you only use a certain length of it, you're in the clear, basically because if you are a good enough artist, who is to say that you didnt compose it yourself, and if its embedded into an .exe, there is pretty much no way of proving that you have just ripped it out of another game? Interesting innit? lol, well if anyone has any further views on this, please let me know, we will be posting the game up somewhere once complete.
