I just came back to DB after taking a long break from it. When I try to run any program (even a hello world program) it just stops and says:
System Error: Surfaces could not be created. D3D Devices do not support backbuffer bit-depth and HW Acceleration
Then it quits.
Does anyone here know how to fix that?
(And no there was not a period at the end. I checked.)
Thanks,

9 times out of 10 this is either (1) You don't have the right version of DirectX installed or (2) Your video card doesn't have suitable drivers installed, or it's just not powerful enough in the first place (usually the first one).

Can you tell me what the right version of DirectX is and where to get it?
I dont think that it is the first because it used to work.
Thanks!

Could you post the exact error message?

(When the message appears, press Ctrl and C at the same time. Then post it in the thread with Ctrl+V...)

The reason I say this is because ATI Rage 3D Pro cards can't handle DarkBASIC Classic due to the specific nature of the settings the DB's 3D engine chooses. This has been proved in roughly 4 cases that I have seen on the forums so far. I used to have a computer with the card in question, but I don't any more; I can however identify the error message.

For DB you need DirectX8. Post your DX version (start - run - dxdiag) and video card type / drivers.

No need, 9 is fine. How about your video card - what is it?

Right-click on the desktop and choose 'Properties'. Hit the Settings tab and it should tell you there.

Although Intel don't make or support that chipset any more, it should support DX8 - which is all that's needed for DB Classic.

DBPro requires DX9, but as you are using Classic, your Intel card should be fine - even though you have installed DX9 (no need to 'downgrade').

Does your 'Hello World' program use Set Display Mode, or is it literally:

Print "Hello World"
Wait Key

If it uses Set Display mode are you trying to use 32bit? If so, try 16 bit.

If it comes to the worst, uninstall DB, re-install it and re-enter the system options.

The hello world program is one line:
print "hello world"

I have already tryed reinstalling DB. I am not sure what you mean by "re-enter system options".
Thanks for helping me with this it is very annoying to me.

You've probably done it already (and it's highly unlikely that sort of error could be caused by this not being done), but since we are running out of suggestions, I'm resorting to unlikely stuff in case you missed something.

On the menu... Edit - Edit Options - Dark Basic Options tab. (This is assuming you are using Dark Edit - other IDE's could have the options somewhere else).

Make sure the first box contains the location of the DB.EXE file.

I use the standard IDE for DB Classic (the one that comes with it). I did discover that if you click quit insted of letting it just close itself because of the error it says something about system cant run? directX and something else about directDraw.
It didnt give me this error the second time I did the same thing tho so im not sure.

Ughh! You're a damn sight braver than me then!

In Windows Explorer, go to

C: \Program Files\Dark Basic Software\Dark Basic

[Edit] Damn smileys (ignore the space)

and double click on xdarkedit.exe. It's an old version, but a bit more fitting for programming in the 21st century. Lol.

When you've seen how much easier life is with it, create an icon on your desktop and go searching on the TGC web site for the latest version.

What's more, you can then set the system options as described above and if you're really lucky your programs might now run!

TDK_Man

PS: I'm still leaning towards it being either a GFX card driver or DirectX issue and would re-install them both (GFX card driver first). In fact, with that card, I would try installing DX8 over the top of DX9 - the worst it could do is not work, so no difference to what it's doing at the moment!

Thanks for the help guys! I fixed the problem mostly by getting into some DirectX/Graphics Card stuff and messing around. For all of the other people that have this problem I would like to post a short tutorial on how to fix the problem.(If you want to put this somewhere etc. then do as you wish)

The Error:
System Error: Surfaces could not be created. D3D Devices do not support backbuffer bit-depth and HW Acceleration

Fixing the Error:
1. Go to Start -> Run
2. Type in "dxdiag" (without "")
3. Chose the tab "Display"
4. Under "DirectX Features" click "Enable" on DirectDraw Acceleration
5. Try again and hope it works!
