I've done various searches on the subject, but I haven't found anything all that conclusive. I've found a number of vague opinions with some supporting facts.

Why did TGC choose ODE over Newton? ODE seems less developed and more buggy. Issues are still being worked out and features are still missing.

Newton has been in development for a long time, and a lot has been done with it. I've seen some pretty impressive examples of Newton in action. Plus, Newton has ragdolls.

I know ODE is open source, but I don't think I'd ever try to rewrite it. I'd rather have something that just works. If I had the time to completely write everything, I don't think I'd be using DBP in the first place. So, this isn't an advantage for me.

There must be something I'm missing. What advantage does ODE have?

Reasons for choosing ODE over Newton are:

1. Credits.
You have to plaster the name 'Newton' throughout your documentation and game to give credit. That means that every game released as a part of FPSC has to include the credits. This is not needed for ODE.

2. Notification.
You have to let the newton team know of every and all releases you make, whether for free or for sale. This is not required for ODE.

3. Separate DLL.
Newton has a separate DLL that requires distribution with each game. ODE can be compiled as a static library (because of the availability of source code) and included completely in a standard DBPro plugin.

and finally ...
4. ODE does what the TGC team needed it to do at the time.

Well, those are the most to the point answers I've seen on the subject to date. ODE is perfect for FPSC, allowing everybody to distribute their games worry free. Newton seems better suited to individual ventures.

Thanks, IanM!

That, and ODE is *supposed* to be much faster than newton. There's no confirmation of that yet however, since we have no real way of stress testing with the current feature level.
