ookay, that is one good title.

Charecters : Wings, sub-div and virtual mirror save countless hours. And the fact that its soo easy to use!

Guns : I have a tie between truespace and Wings, i think i will switch to wings soon though because im getting the hang of it. (i could never actually make anything with Truespace)But Truespace is good (v.3.2) but its old and it has clunky controls so i am using wings for my models.

A tip: Get both wings and truespace (both free), and use truespace to render your objects, because wings is really bad at rendering. Also truespace is a good program to convert objects between the formats (3ds/x) and retain everything.

If money is no object, then Rhino3D is ideal for mechanical modelling. You can use nurbs objects to combine extruded shapes to form your model, cut holes, and then convert to polygons. The best thing is the sheer speed that you can build models, like with good reference material you set the bitmaps to the camera views and basically trace the lines.

I use it for everything although I'd say Milkshape was pretty damn good for character models.

First off, please avoid putting anything along the lines of

GUN ==+read this!+== CHAR

In a thread title.

Secondly, there is no "best modeler" for -ANYTHING- Maya, Max, Lightwave, Rhino, C4D, XSI|Softimage are all industry standard, feature packed modellers, but of course for the "best" your going to paying a good deal of money (about $7,500 for the full version of Maya)

The "best" modeler for you is what *you* are happy modelling with. I like Milkshape 3D, it only costs $20 and it is perfect for lowpoly modeling thus ideal for DB stuff. A lot of users here like Wings3D, Blender, Anim8or or any other package because they are Free and thats their budget (although I cant see how you couldnt scrap up $20 bucks for MS3D, just mow a couple lawns or shovel a couple driveways if your young)

The only way you can find out what the best software is, is to go out and try them all for yourself. There are plenty of sticky threads at the top of this forum that have links to lots of free modellers, lots of tutorials and many other interesting and useful tidbits of information that will help you get started.

Have Fun

I know a great modeller for guns, Quikly modeller, very well made in Dark Basic Pro, made by one of our forum member, Kangaroo 2, which is easy to use and makes most models playing a around with simple cubes, and editing them,

http://www.quikly.com
or
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=67573&b=5
here is a screenshot with a gun made in Quikly Model

And well TGC members can get it for free, but with a limited stock if you PM Kangaroo through the quikly forums, I'm still waiting for my own copy, but otherwise it would be a mere £10

ITS NOT MINE!!! I just took the screenshot straight from the quikly website, Kangaroo 2 actually modelled it as well as programming the program, me, all I've made in his program is a cube lol

@DB newbe, Well if you sign up to the Quikly forums with your TGC and a link to prove you're a TGC member and your email address, with his offer you can get it for free, but its only free to a limited amount of members, and is incredible easy to use (According to roo ) So you don't need money If you get in there quick dude

Oh and i have one tip about trying things out, before i could actually model anything i did try out all the free ones and i noticed something. I got easily discouraged because although i could follow tutrials i could never do anything alone. And every time i tried a software (wings, anim8or, blender), i would quit in a 2-3 days because of this. It was basically i wanted results fast. So if you are trying a modelling software, i would recommend you read one or two tutorials to learn the controls (wings is really easy to pick up), then , only use really general tutorials (like the ones i posted above), so that you can see what needs to be done, but you have to use your own thinking to get there. It makes you a much better modeller.

oh and if your using wings, Ctrl+Alt+Z is your best friend..that and the 'C' key.

There are loads of apps, and there will be at least one that'll suit you and a perfect one unfortunately, a lot of the really good ones cost money, but you still got the easy lot to learn from without the money,

wings is good, I barely used it, when I tried it, I didn't feel there was much control, but thats me and 10 minutes of using it , anim8or was the program I started with.

you should do what Gokz did I wish I did and I tell most people to do, try out as much as you can and find out which you like best, Wings might no be for you dude

This sounds like a very promising project!!!!!!!!!!!!

Milkshape 3d for both. I would say Max, but that's a little too high leauge for someone who seriously thinks that they can accomplish next-generation graphics while not even being properly literate.

Wings 3D is good, but all modeling programs require extensive practice, patience, and literacy

To be honest I wouldn't say this thread had much flaming in it, the flaming I see is only constructive, to point out points that seem stupid to people, and well in a way the majority wouldn't or shouldn't be offended by, but emphasises it. I tend not to approve of flaming, but from some of this threads, you're beginning to dig yourself into it, my advice is slow down. You have plenty of time to learn to model, and well, to most people the project, sounds like a lie or a distortion of truth, hence one persons sarcastic comment.

Also, most of the threads I've replied to today have been yours dude, take what I've said in those threads, and what Big Add and I have said in Big Add's thread into account, and progress from there, and please try to be realistic dude, people on this forum hate it when people are too unrealistic, and so they flame.

Please don't take any comments I've said or anyone else has said offensively, as they are constructive in their own way
