Some people here may remember a few months back I attempted to create a gun in 3ds max purely out of primitives, it didn't turn out too well.

So this time I followed a tutorial for creating a counter-strike model, and then just started changing some things / adding things on.

Overall impression? (Apart from having no eyes, a very small gun and having coloured faces as opposed to a decent texture)

Please be brutal - only way to get better (that and practice)

You may have noticed I have no idea what keeping the number of polys down means

Well. aside from the stuff that he said to ignore, The feet and heel of the boots have an odd shape, unless its just the angle. Somehow the arms seem too long, maybe make the legs longer and the torso shorter. Its good for a start tho

Im sick of Master Chief soo...ooga booga!!
Explain to me why some people pay money for 3d software? Its not 3d till its been blended. wwww.blender3d.org

from this point get yourself a background image of a women, front view would be the best and work out the minor details like appendage length, hips, chest, shoulders, etc...

It's a great start, but there is still much to learn in the way of anatomy..

Psst - the legs/boots are really bad

Frozen Flame: I i posted in one of your threads asking YOU to make it but then shadow took over and made it -- poor guy probably doesn't think he'll ever see it used... I decided I couldn't go on asking everyone else to model for me, so I decided to try my own hand at it

And to anyone really: The boots look terrible coz there was nothing about them in the tutorial I did, that was just me messing about with vertices, and connecting them together.

And just to finish off to DB Newbe: Actually, White isn't untextured in milkshape (that's supposed to be skin!), Grey is untextured...

actually the untextured colour is only defined by the diffuse, specular, ambient and for the sake of argument your model is unskinned unless its some goth,

i dont think the topic title is very good as im sure many people could become very good 3d modelelrs just requires practice.

Well, keep learning dude, at the moment, you would prolly be turned down by employers, most of them expect you to texture your own models, and would want skill there too, I would keep on learning, its a good model, but to be honest not good enough yet, considering now companies will want more new generation quality models.

However on a more inspiring note, you should just practice, if you want to take this into a career you got a good start, some people will want people with qualifications, some won't, when you are 18, you can start a career in it, asuming you are under that age, you'll should have plenty of time to learn to make industry standard models

I'm not after a career in this, I just find it hard to work in teams. So for game development I'll eventually have to do each aspect fairly well (Yes I am under that age -- sooo close)

Errr - it's not supposed to be some goth, so texturing will be something else I have to learn... Why can't life be simple?

well if you want to work as part of a TGC team, then texturing skills will not be manditory, and well there you have already a future, if you want money out of it as a freelancer, then there are the things I said above to consider

Well - I made quite a few changes to it, then out of nowhere...

Access Violation (Some hex address I didn't care about). Memory could not be "written" Click OK to terminate the application or Cancel to Debug...

NOOOOOOOOOO!! I'd not saved it for a long time I think I've just lost all motivation now...

That happened to me allot with truespace, which is why i use wings to model now, and truespace just to convert.

Never give up dude. Think of a new project, and keep pushing yourself.

I've just done that absolute no-no, particularly for beginners (like me). Not posting rapidly, but instead I started something else, Annoyed with it crashing last time - something without lots of fiddly bits and awkward shapes...

It's not textured (even if it looks like it is)

Quite deadly!

What can I do to make this better (on top of things like giving it a power supply and a fire trigger) - I read on another thread, don't run before you can walk, so hopefully this more like walking...

I think you might need to look up "hypocrite" in the dictionary.

Unless you try to pressure your kids into drinking, telling them it's good for you.

Perhaps not the best word then - but would I sell it if I believed it was so bad

Unfortunately, we've become a little side-tracked from the original subject somewhere...

so, without texturing, how would I improve that - Right now I'm only learning how to construct models, I'll try texturing once I can build to a decent standard...

maybe slightly not too much now. increase the width of the inside radius of the barrels. Im not sure if that will help but I think thats whats makin them look like straws. give it a shot and see what happens.

they look like thin weak copper pipes, that wouldn't handle the pressure, and would bend easily, just thicken em a bit

Ahhh input! In the famous words of Johnny Five...

I thickened the barrels a bit, and added some solid barrels, so the barrels are less likely to dent and buckle under the extreme pressure - Because physics are important...

So now it has 56 barrels, but 12 of them can't be used, I wonder how much recoil this would give if it actually existed...

So, anything else I should do to this?

The latest Milkshape 3d builds are terribly unstable. You'll get used to pressing CTRL+S after every single operation you make.

ya but that human primitive wasnt meant to be used as game models you should model your own.

And Human Meg and Otto are way to detailed for Games. Also it will be illegal to use them in games... probably.

You can only use them if and ONLY if YOU made them, the ones in Cinema 4D are for composition and referance only, so you can set up your scene how you want before you've modelled your characters, it looks perfect for you, then you model your characters in place.

The thread was based on a character -- unfortunately (as should be obvious) milkshape doesn't have a "human figure" option, It does have UT, Valve and Max Payne Skeletons, but no pre-built faces or example background images, so I'd have to do it the good ol' fashioned way... But I'm going to try and model a few more simpler things before I return to that...

I'm back again - this time with a tank...

Well, sadly it looks a little like something you might see in the beano, but a real achievement for me - It's under 300 triangles!

The title of this thread is admittedly, a little stupid and misleading, so think of it more as "Am I getting at 3D modelling..."

Before anyone says anything about there not being any wheels in the tracks, I know, but I've seen a few games around that've missed off the same detail...

The chaingun looks better now, and the Tanks not bad. Try making the end of the barrel wider than the rest(extruding the end faces would be sufficent).

I dont know why i have a knack for this but i just love making these weapons people model more realistic.

Quote: "So now it has 56 barrels, but 12 of them can't be used, I wonder how much recoil this would give if it actually existed..."

none... simply because you dont have the key elements to a gun.

trigger
magazine
combustion chamber

i suppose the box on the back could be a combustion chamber for the bullets. but the bullets that could fit in there would last about .001 seconds.

if your running on a strip mag like the ones you feed through the side with your hands and wear over your bod like a tru badass then you need to have a slot for that.

about the barrels, if its truly a chaingun it will need to rotate. If you want to rotate all those barrels at once your going to need a mechanism that can spin the mass of that barrel conglomeration.

anywho, about the girl model it just looks a litle out of proportion. The CS Girl modelling tut is good but it has some proportional issues with long legs and arms. this isnt your fault but it would be good to fix that. also from the tut the hed is a little small :\.

besides all of those bad points that i put your models are great. I was just listing the bad points to help you, but there really are more good points to list if i had the time
