Well i have finished my first charecter (i would have posted him but no one seemed to care ) and i have sketched out the game. Now its time to bring the 2d art to life.

I was going to try and just model the landscape in Wings but the i stopped and thought to my self, is there another way to do this?

Thats why all i ask is that someone point me in the right direction for general landscape building. Just some basic tutorials, it doesnt have to be for wings, just give me an idea of how this should be done.

And also if someone could show me if there are any easier tools to do this, i dont want to use matrixes right now because they seem to be a memory hog.

Finally i would like to know how to texture landscape.

By the way for graphical feel, i was looking for a game that looked similar to this :
http://www.lgdg.net/bkommando/grunty/Banjo-Kazooie-11.jpg
due to time constraints (caimans compo)

Anyways, i know im aksing for allot but any help would be usefull
thanks.

Thanks, Insanity. I think i might divide the level into many models and put em togeather at the end.

Good idea there. lol, but Wings grid feature(you are using Wings arent you? I think I saw you say that in another thread) is great to make a lovely level from

Well, Banjo & Kazooie doesn't really have any landscapes...it's all primitives.

For actual landscaping I'd reccomend t.ED

i know i doesnt have a landscape theoretically but as a final product that is what i am aming for. Simple (time contraint) but is pleasing to the eye. I would be foolish to show a picture of Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess as my example of Landscape.

@Megaton: $89..now way i can afford that.

@IC : thanks but i cant find it, all i see is Spring, UV TOrus and stuff like that.

It's no problem at all...took me forever to find all these goodies. Always remember that outliner window though...

I'm sorta confused now...are we talking landscapes like Advanced Terrain or "landscapes" like the one in the screen Zedane posted?

I quickly whiped up something similar, just wondering if this is the style you were going for:

Megaton..wow that was exactly what i was going for and you made it. Wow. I must say the way those are textured..that is exactly how i wanted the game to look.

Could you explain how you did this. I can make the actual landscape, but texturing (or whatever you did) like that is beyond me.

and to answer your question, i dont really care if its primitives or actual landscapes. As long as i can achive the above quickly.

oh and sorry i got the wrong price. Your right, but i have used most of my money and i have to buy my animation tool as soon as the trial runs out. But anyways if i can achive desidered results without those tools i would love to do it.

Doesn't take much to make...if you give me a sketch of the map layout, I could just do the whole level for you. (Yes, too much free time tommrow)

Cool, but then again it wouldnt feel like my own. If i run into any problems though i will as you, but i think i can manage those levels as long as someone explains to me how to texture it like you did.

BTW. Your Model Pack rocks, you deserve a pat on the back for handing it out for free.

As of right now though, a simple area like that you have made above will do for me (to test animation of charecter), but i still need to learn to texture it like you have. Could you help me out?

Honestly? Those arn't my textures, they are from an old dropped project. Just standerd UV coordinates meddling for the textures.

okay well then here is my question(s)
1. So how do i actually get that grass on the ground of my levels.
2. how do i get that fading mountain/grass on my levels.

i mean i can get the actual geometry, its those textures i am worried about. I have no idea where to start, all i know is materials.

Thanks again Megaton.

Wings has an auto UV option try it out. I don't know how to do UV yet, so I haven't played with it at all. I'm just polishing box modeling skills right now.

Well firstly if you're asking how all this goes in Milkshape, I can't help ya there. I did that in Cshop 4.1

It's made using 3 textures, and here they are: Should be easy to figure out now.

I'd also like to mention that you're insane if you attempt level design in Milkshape. Take my advice and just don't bother: it wasn't meant for that.

Im doing level desgin in wings 3d, and the reason i made this post was because i knew that there might be problems with my idea.

Thanks for the textures though, ill be looking up on how to implement them now.

well, one way to achieve a similar output as megaton's image above, its not the best way but it works and you can build on it later.

make all of the blocks in his image out of cubes, you can rotate them on their side to make the ramps, won't look to happy on the texture necessarily, but you can edit them if you want to work out, but I don't know your wings knowledge and make a plain/flat cube for the floor, and then apply the textures to each of those faces, if you don't know how well, you're a good DBP programmer, so that should come in use

I had a good level made (atleast to my standards,)but my computer shutdown over night somehow so its back to the workshop. One thing i did notice was that wings spreads the texture evenly, while that works great for grass, it sucks when done on a mountain because i just see brown and nothing else.

here is one i just made.

notice how the grass and mountain just look plain. I going to have to look up how to fix that. Because i have applied the texture to the model. The other thing is that im going to have to learn to make 1337 textures in paint, or atleast ones that look similar to megatons.

Damn you Megaton!! Why must yours be soo perfect! Lol.

But i can see that its basically just extruding cubes out of a plane, then moving a edge to make a ramp.

The part that gets by me is texturing like you do, but im going to have a go at it with truespace, see where it gets me.

One question though, what did you use to model that, and what type of texture did you use, because i am allways given the choice between diffuse, bump , <something else> and no matter which i pick it seems its allways diffused instead of coming out awesome like yours. see mine for example.

I mentioned it twice: I use Cshop.

And there's only 1 type of texture in Cshop, which was what I used.

Catch me on msn and I'll help you out. Gotta go now.

umm noo, sorry for being so stupid. My aim button is clickable. If you knew your button was not clickable then why didnt you just post your msn screen name or email address for me to add. Its not like im going to go search TGC for your msn when you were to lazy to tell me what it is. You said "catch me on MSN" so assumed that i should add you to my buddy list, but now since its obvious that the msn button is not to be clickable you should have just told me the email you were using when you registred with msn. My email and my msn email are completly differnt, thus i am not sure what to add in my buddy list to talk to you on msn.

i did however add your email to my msn buddy list.

@DBmad, theres a better way than using the landscape tool in C4D, I'll make a tut on how, because I think it will be pretty useful, as there are people who will want to make landscapes

How about a sonic style landscape? I wanna insert a lovely rotating disorientating level into my remake and it helps to make the 3d level for it first...hehe. To be technical its not a landscape though...so don't throw that at me as I already caught it myself.

hey, I want to see your character. I am currently designing a platformer in the vein of banjo-kazooie(my favorite video game franchise I might add) also. I am really curious about everything about your game thus far and what you want the completed project to be.
