first, it is possible to have your character walking on a terrain (matrix or otherwise) with object collision.

"collision" = objects overlapping
"hit" = objects just barly touching

now if your terrain is a uniform height then I'd just set the caracters Ypos so it looks like it's walking on the ground. The only reason I can see to use collision is if the object where falling (i.e. some sort of global-gravity) and you needed to constantly check if it where at ground level.

...that move was indeed...Bold.

As for the RPG AI, basically I would do it like so (using pseuo-code)

turn = 0
while turn = 0
(player options)
if player attack =1 then turn =1
endwhile
while turn = 1
AI options
if AI attack =1 then turn = 0
endwhile
loop

see how that would work (I've done before just didn't want to post the while actual code if it wasn't needed)

...that move was indeed...Bold.

Then of course if you wanted to implement more characters, you could have monsters choose a random character (for next) or find the character with the least amount of health, or the most amount of heath. There are plenty of ways to do it
