press enter, then use the pg dwn and pgup keys to position him in the right spot.

Yes. You need to hold them down until the character entity you selected is in the right position. As it says for itself, hold pageup to move the entity higher and pagedown to move the entity lower. you can also do this with things like guns which you are trying to put on top of a table-works with any entity and makes it looks better then a gun being placed randomly on the floor.
