Hi,

I was looking for a quick solution to create own MD2 files e.g. for character animations. But I didn't find any free and working tool to convert a 3DSMAX animation into a single MD2 file.

So I produced my own MD2 Converter called WinMD2. Take a look at the screenshot:

Download WinMD2 demo version here:
http://www.vbmyadmin.com/download/WinMD2.exe

Sample files to try out:
http://www.vbmyadmin.com/taylor/WinMD2/x.rar
http://www.vbmyadmin.com/taylor/WinMD2/sample.md2

You can load and view the sample MD2 file in "3D Exploration" and DBPro. Texture coordinates are present inside the MD2 file - texturing in DBPro is very easy. "Set object texture" with the skin texture works pretty nice. So what I get now is a single MD2 File (0.12 MB) instead of a X File-sequence (5.00 MB), including all animations.

Sweet! Now people can animate their models in anim8or. It has an exporter that exports it's animations in sequences like what you had in your 3ds.rar, so it was useless before. (I'll have to try it to make sure though)

Yes, any X file-sequence can be used as source.

Thank you.

I work on a demonstration with character animations (and cloth animations) - I post link later to download it. MD2 is just so great 6MB of .X files are compressed to less then 0.2MB and animations included into that single file.

Hi,

This looks really useful to me. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see a link to download the actual software. Are you releasing it?

Also, I assume the sequence of .x models must all contain the same vertex count for it to work properly.

@ Tom Taylor - this would be a damn handy utility - not unlike a more user friendly version of the 3ds to md2 quake 2 utility...

where's the download link? cant find on your website....

Thank you. It's really nice to use if it comes to vertex-based animations. To create usefull and fast vertex anmiations in DBPro in not easy. Complex character animations e.g. are very easy to import into DBPro with that tool now. Maybe I make a Demo Version to let u try out... limited in anything.

Here is a DBPro example. It uses the MD2 files compiled with WinMD2. The Character animation is done with 3DS MAX and Character Studio (Biped).

I updated WinMD2 to support swapping axis and to scale the objects. Some exporters (from 3DS to X) ignore the "FrameTransformMatrix" so objects might be displayed unexpected from DBPro finally. WinMD2 can fix that now Rotation could be supported as well.

I will start to release WinMD2 on my web site. It will not be free -but I make a DEMO Version (key protected) to test it of course.

Thx, Tom

Thank you Duffer. I will add more features. To name the frames would be nice and maybe a DBPro function to return the skin name for automatically loading the image with the model in one routine. And I think about a composer to add multiple MD2 animations together.

Thanks Tom,

I snapped up a free reg code(I assume it's gonna be e-mailed)

Hi Doggie,

sure I have. I use "3D Exploration" to convert my 3DS to X files. Look into the attachment to see what version I use exactly. I think it is one of the best converters (3DS to X) with preview.

You got your registercode for WinMD2 by email.

Thx, Tom

Hi,

I am very happy about the responses I got from you related to WinMD2. 3D modeling and animating is not an easy task

WinMD2 did crash with not quite resonable messages if you try to load wrong files. I fixed that for some special cases.

Thank you David I. and David Y. for the files to test!

So there's the new version 1.1.0 to download:
http://www.taylorslab.com

If you have registered your WinMD2 installation, it will stay registered after you install the update.

Kind regards,
Tom

Hi, I have improved the WinMD2 tool.

WinMD2 use the FrameTransformMatrix from the .X files now. That means, you can use any exporter or converter and your objects are exactly in the right place (position, size and rotation).

The new version will be completly FREE!! But you will still need to register (by email). New download is available soon! I will post the link if the update is final for download.

Kind regards,
Tom

Woo! Nice dude, I thought it was some gundam action figure.

Can you explain how this can be used in animations? Are you saying we can export the same character in different poses as md2, which will make it more convenient to load it into DBP? or can animation data actually be stored in that format (meaning when you use Play OBject, it really works, for use with anim8or stuff)

Need you reply on that, awesome converter dude.

Hi Keemo1000,

yes your right. It is so easy to use the MD2 animation format into DBPro!

Example:

LOAD OBJECT "sample.md2", 1
PLAY OBJECT 1, 0, 50

This will play the "sample.md2" from frame 0 to 50. That simple it is.

My converter is made for creating MD2 files, ready to use into DBPro. You can get more information about the format and how to use the converter on my website: http://www.taylorslab.com/

And, yes... You can use ANY 3d-tool (like anim8or) that can export a SINGLE FRAME as 3DS or X file. Usually these 3d-tools don't support MD2 format directly.

Any more questions? Feel free to ask me

Kind regards,
Tom

Hello Tom, got the demo down off the site and applied for a free registration. No news yet though? Sent you a mail as well but I'm not sure you got it. First object I made and tried in the demo said it did not support.. something or other.. lol and then crashed. The site said there were 78 free registrations left when I registered so I'm wondering if you are still checking your site or not?

Anyway I would like to see if the full version works with my objects if possible.....
