Just wanted to say thank you to TGC for the segment editor.

Without it - my terrain wouldnt exist.

(I hope TGC read this, that may be pie in the sky...)

Its a total god send! Hurrah!

As an aside - the tutorial is amazinginly in depth (and I love the lancashire accent on it too ) but it doesnt state that you can happily use the segment editor to create segments 3 x 3 squares big. It advises only to use the middle square with the adjacent squares for viewing only.

3 x 3 segments have allowed my hills, and bumby ground etc without the pitfalls (haha) of placing entities.

3 cheers for TGC!

Has everyone else felt the love the segment editor has to give?

has anyone built any crazy 3 x 3 segments yet?

I have some awesome hills segments with craters and trees in the segment, avoiding the entity trap.

Anyone wanna see?

(Failing that - lets just kill this thread

@tpfkat -

Dude

Go to http://files2.thegamecreators.com/fpscreator/FPSCreator_SegmentKit.zip

Watch the tutorials. Closeley. And then watch em again....

@Shadows back...No you dont want to see my lovely terrain? Well FINE
hehehehe

Textures? With the segment editor (Remember its Beta and an in-house tool so were lucky to get it at all, even if its a little buggy) - watch the tutorials - its all covered in there, even if it does take about half an hour of your life up.

You have to put all your textures and meshes into the segment editor file structure - you dont load them out of FPSC. So you have to copy and paste em into the correct SE Folders.

Hope that helps,

Mabuggi

I am indeedy - just at work at the mo - will upload on me lunch.

What are you loading in?

From scratch or a segment from FPSC?

From FPSC you need to:

Copy the X file into the SE Meshbank.
Copy the texture file into the SE texture bank.
Copy the segment files from the FPSC Segment folder into the SE Segment folder.
Like I said, at work at the mo, so thats off the top of my head and is a really quick reply - i'd give the video tutorials a go if your having probs - they are pretty comprehensive - if a little on turbo speed

Will upload some screen shots in about an hour on me lunch break.

Post back if your having probs man.

here we go;

its from a few weeks ago when we first figured out how to get terrain working properly.

Since then we made new & better pieces - these are first draft and displayed as a line.

(Oh yeah, thats a tunnel going through the hill - so you can start a level underground or whatever and then pop up into the outside world. )

wow cool textures and meshes, and yes you can use all 3 x 3 but you will get an overlap. To get around this you just need to make you terrans as entities, set to static mode then you are away

NICE WORK!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Guys,

Carlito - With segments we found you can get away from the overlap - but it takes hours of fiddling - which is where my bro comes in. Hes the 3DSM head, and loves nothing more than spending hours making one segment fit next to the other.

Did you have problems with accurately placing the terrain as an entity? Is one faster than the other for the computer to handle? Which would run better / faster a segment or an entity? Hmmmm - May have to post that question in the media forum.

Bloodeath -
1. Thank you.
2. We will make a pack and it will be DIRT, dirt cheap.
3. Heheh - that, my friend, is a dry stone wall. We have a lot of them up here in yorkshire. Our new one has moss on it

Thank you for your kind words guys.

I'm impressed. Very good work mate.

I'm pretty sure I know everything. Doubts are something rare in me and I am never wrong, as this signature can prove.

Thank you again for your comments - Ive slapped my bro now and hes signing up on the forum, as I shouldnt take credit for his work, but we are a team (Dab studios).

He does all the visuals - I do all the plot / storyboarding, scripting, we both do the level design & sound etc.

As Im sure he will tell you all when he finally joins - we will release a boatload of stuff as soon as its ready, and as I said before it will cost peanuts. Well, not actual peanuts cos I dont like them, but you know what I mean.

Not been FPSC'ing much of late, got my head well into DBP at the mo, but my game is still being worked on! Hurrah for teams!

Just to let you know - the model pack will be about a month.

It will have lots of quality entities and segments, modern day, usual outside stuff.

I know there is an abundance of this stuff already - so its not like were doing this for the cash or anything.

Will post more screenies when there is more.

Mabuggi, how about a step-by-step how-to on using the segment editor and then successfully integrating custom creations into FPSC? I'm usually pretty good at figuring things out but the segment editor is doing weird things for me. (saw your pics by the way, awesome!) After trial and error I created a room and applied my own custom texture to it. I followed the video tutorials to the letter. I copied the files over to FPSC and began drawing. For some reason the corners of my walls are missing, where they meet. I've tried redrawing using segment editor and still th same thing. It's driving me insane. I've also read on the forum that textures can be changed without the use of the editor? When I peek into the .FPS files I see references to .TGA files for textures but they don't exist in the directories they are pointing to, only .DDS files. I'm assuming that the .DDS files contain the .TGA file information in compressed format?? I noticed that when I created my room in segment editor it made a .DDS file from my three .TGA files I supplied for the wall texture.

Also, the .FPM files that FPSC creates are nothing more than PKZIP files. I tried to extract the files but they are password protected. Has this ever been brought up on the forums before? Would it help us to know the structure of the .FPM files? Why password protected?

Thank you very much sir! I am very interested in learning FPSC, especially creating my own custom levels. Also, has there been any discussion on the forums about tweaking the enemy AI through the use of scripting or the like? It's understandable that the AI is mediocre, and I'm not complaining, I was just wondering if users have access to raise their IQs a bit?

Thanks again for the tut! I'll be checking back often.
