Hello Everyone,

I just a question about royalties and there relation to modeling programs. I know this may seem like a dumb question, but I'm really wondering, and nobody has seemed to ask it before.

So lets say a walk into a comptuer store, and buy a 3d modeler right off the shelf, and then take it home, make a model with it, and stick that model in a game. Then I sell that game and make some money.

Would you have pay the modeling program you created the model with a royalty for it? After you create it, is 100% yours? I ask this question beacuse I'm on the market for a modeling program, and I see some of the ones on this site are described as "royalty free"

Thanks for any answers.

Ive never really thought about it. Think about it this way, how would they prove that you made the model in there program? If they even cared to go through all the trouble to bring a court case. and thats IF anyone who cared played your game. And even if they did im sure they wouldnt be like "those polygons look familiar, lets sue whoever made this shizzz". you se?

Once you purchase the program you are free to do whatever you want with the exception of breaking down the actual software code, in most cases the code is propritary...

Try not to give too much credit to the modeling programs.... When you fire up your 3-d program does it build anything for you without your manipulation of the tools?

Think of this way, if you use a word processing program to write a book, that in turn becomes popular and you sell a million copies, does the maker of the word processor have any claim on the profits?

How about if you painted the next mona lisa, does the maker of the paint, canvas, or brushes have any claim...

People give too much credit to 3-d programs in the way of thinking the program actually does something, every time if fire up Max it just sits there! Sometimes I will boot it up in the morning then I say to it build me an Orc for RPG's, then when I get home from my days appointments, the damn lazy thing has not even started building an Orc!!!!

Pffffff - I'd ask for your money back on your PC man.

"***RETURN*** - WOULD NOT BUILD ORCS ON DEMAND"

I think PC world have a department just for that....

@Chily Dog - Nice to know you care though bro.... Its a refreshing change to "I need a 3d orc textured now for free".....

Happy gaming man.

Which "modeling programs" are you refering to? or are you refering to programs that generate something for you? ie Treemagik, which "generates/creates" trees for you.

As i know you can Sell your models or your models in a game you don`t have to give any credits or anything to program , as long as YOU MADE THEM in that program , they`r yours to sell or do whatever you like with them. ONLY things that are prohibet are : DECOMPILING OF THE PROGRAM OR DISSASEMBLING OR ANYHOW GETTING THE SOURCE CODE , and if you have any premade models in program ( i mean models that you just like drag into the workfield , that are finished ) they are most likely owned by company of the program and there for learning purpoises , so you cannot sell them in game or anyhow , but anything you made you should have no troubles with selling or anything.
