Amazing, now I just have to await some screenies.

Hey, I am a total noob to DBP, so if you would be kind enough to just help me along. I'm good with FPSC though, just learning DBP now.

I have quake 4, i might try the same.

...only, you won't be able to sell the game because the models aren't under your license, they're under ID software's (or Ravern, not quite sure which).

Can't wait for the video

Your screwed then because distribution of the models is illegal so Origin can't give them to you and as far as i know, 360 models differ from ones in the P.C version (formats ).

Plus, can you actually access those files on the 360?

The only reason the model work is because some of them are .lwo and can be opened in anim8or, milkshape and a whole host of other programs, then converted to .X format.

As for the textures, some of those are .tga anyway.

I extracted all the sounds from the game (all 9000 of them) and i'm using those as references for when i come to record my own.

Where's the screenies and the vids?

illegal? wtf are you talking about? its only illegal if he charges for them. search around the web. you will find many other models from games ive seen kasumi/ayane (DOAu) masterchief (halo)goku (dbz)
and the models from F.E.A.R AND quake 4 medics realsed for garrys mod. so if this is illegal. then damn allot of peaple will be thrown in jail tonight.

As far as i was concerned, unless you have ID's permission to distribute (with or without charge) then it's illegal...i think.

Yeah someone actually sent this question to John Carmack, and according to his response it looks like its cool as along as you aren't doing anything commercial, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Here's what I found:

Quote: "Using id Software file formats in a publicly distributed application always seemed a little questionable to me in terms of legality. In preparation of this document I contacted id Software to resolve the issue; John Carmack was kind enough to send along this response:

"We do not legally protect the file formats, but you can't use any of the released tools, or tools derived from them (except the GPL'd Quake 1 tools) to generate content for a commercial venture. If you are writing everything yourself, no problem.""

Just unpack the .pak files with winrar and go grab an md5 importer off the web for 3ds max. It's not that hard.

Companies like ID allow modding of their games, for that reason they have to be prepared for their media and technologies to be used in other ways, be it fan games, machima, or even just using the stuff as a guide to learn from.

The only problem would be for people trying to sell a game containing ID's media, your liable to end up with at least a cease and desist order if not a lawsuit.

This refers to the "file format", the .bsp or md2, and not the "3d file" or media. For example, make model in Milkshape, export as MD2 and use in game made with FPSC or DB. It does not mean, yeah go ahead and use the models from our game in yours.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Yes Joh you're right. I should have read it more carefully.

That said, my conscience wouldn't bother me if I decided to drop a few models in my game for fun. Non-commercial of course, just for friends and family.

Gamerboy, read some law, you can't sue for false advertisment if he isn't selling anything to begin with.

And it is still illigal to rip it out of the pack and use it, unless you have a written statment from the creators saying you can.
