i cant find a program to open the .dds files in the program folder, is there a program to view or edit them with?

.dds files are bitmaps. I use photoshop with a dds plugin from Nvidia. To just view them or convert them, you can use Irfanview which is freeware I believe. You can use it to convert the .dds to .tga or .bmp and then use any paint program that supports these to edit the image. FPSC accepts these other file types and when you run the level, it will also create the .dds

The directX 9 sdk has a utility called "texture tool" where you can view .dds.

It's nice because you can see the alpha maps as well, something I don't think Irfanview does.
